Ah! I have always liked the way Klemperer conducted Brahms.

I wonder whether the fact that the Walter is only available in the massive Walter edition is a reason why it was not included ( yes I know there are lots of the deleted single CDs around for sale)

If you email SJ and ask I believe you have a good chance of an answer. Mr J seems to be quite approachable

All the time I’ve been working away, writing and broadcasting, something else has been fermenting away in the background - composing.

I regret to say I never got round to soileduk's suggestion . After the Karabits No 2 however I did go and listen to the Walter Columbia No 2 and surely every note explains why he was so beloved of musicians like our HS .

Through a blind listening test on another site I discovered this version—an 'alternative' one but one I find quite pleasing:

The winner hasn't been announced yet, so I don't know if Jurowski, Abbado or Haitink are contestants at all or where they placed, but nothing I've heard yet has swayed my loyalty to Jochum/LPO.

As suspected Jurowski was the winner.

I have to say exposition repeat and all I have fallen for this Kertesz recording especially marvellous horn playing . The whole set on Eloquence with his wonderful recording of the Serenades thrown in has been a complete treat this spring . I only knew his Fourth before on a Decca Jubilee cassette but always loved it .

A wonderful set , superbly played and beautifully recorded .

The Danish /Horenstein recording on Unicorn continues to enthrall . How blessed we are to have do many great performances of this symphony .

Best of the enlivening recent revisionists.....

Tapiola Sinfonietta/Venzago (gorgeously cantabile!), Swedish CO/Dausgaard......
I have not listened intensively, but Scottish CO/Ticciati seems a worthy successor to the classic Mackerras (who based his very free readings on a study of the annotated scores of Fiedler and Steinbach) with the same orchestra.

As for Norrington - broadly I prefer the LCP in this cycle, but both they and the SWR are excellent, ear-opening experiences....

Glorious one-off: Czech Phil/Ancerl, 1967, on the Supraphon Gold Edition...

I continue to think Jurowski’s with the LPO on LPO Live is marvellous

(It also emerged top of the pile in the French radio record critics’ blind listening survey (against some of the distinguished company mentioned here) as I probably mentioned up-thread
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I remember this from my mono LP, bought in 1965. Beautifully played and recorded, but marred by a touch of tape wow in the finale. I wonder whether it’s an issue on today’s CDs?

I haven't noticed it- but will listen today . Agree with Cloughie that all those he mentions are outstanding performances - except the Kubelik but only because I do not know it.
