I'm sure Johannes B went to the racing in the Prater on a summer's day.

The sort of day to confirm that horseracing and music provide the greatest pleasures in life.

And with Stephen Johnson giving Bernard Haitink a more favourable run in BAL than I might have done
myself, all seems well with the world.

Mrs. P G and myself have spent a lovely 75 mins listening to Haitink's Brahms 2 & 3 with the Concertgebouw on a Philips 'Silver Line' disc which I found in Oxfam last week for £2.99! Just gorgeous music making and a superb recorded sound. (A great sense of 'space' around the orchestra).

Has there been a Bal on Brahms 3 recently? Now THAT'S a work that separates the men from the boys!

I think Robert Phillip chose Abbado for the Third a couple of years ago.

PG, now that seems to ring a bell. I think, I am not tpoo sure, but Jeggers was in the fron running order? I do rather like Haitink, Rattle and Abbado though.

Thank you for the replies - a great help. I used to record ALL of CD Review on mini-disc and file them in shoe boxes with the Bals written on the inside of the lid. However, since having got married I've had other things to do!

I went to file the disc of 2 & 3 away and found I had the 4th symphony and the Haydn Variations in the same series bought in Heart Foundation last July for £1! The qualities of Bernie's Brahms are just as superb as the other two symphonies.

Now to find the First symphony on Phillips Silver Line...

Should you find Haitink's Boston SO Brahms cycle on your charity shop travels make sure to snap it up. I found the individual discs in Gramex in London and think it to be the most impressive cycle I've heard. No longer officially available which is shocking!

If you change "horse" to "F1" I would be in agreement......

Ending the day with that performance too, pg It is lovely, indeed.

I was given the box years ago and forgot until this morning that I had it. Slightly shrill recording, in the louder passages, to my ears, but the pacing, the ebb and flow... completely involving. (Reminds me of that long-standing favourite in my collection, the Haitink/Concertgebouw recording of Brahms's Serenade No 1 EDIT: I've just noticed the 2 Serenades are in the box too, duplicating the single disc copy I've played to death over the years...)
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I found the sound to be quite mellow and full, Caliban. So much better than many other recordings.

My fav. recording of the first serenade is Abbado and the Berlin Phil. A glorious recording.

If we ever won the lottery I would love to have a house where each living room had a different top quality Hi-Fi in it so I could make comparisons of discs.

PG - no, all you need is a DAC with different filter choices!

Is this thread becoming Brahms Eternally or Brahms Integrale or something...? OK, the Serenades... Wand/Cologne RSO in No.1, for 1&2 together Mackerras/SCO or Philharmonia/D'Avalos... gorgeous pieces, whomever...

And don't forget Bernie Haitinks building a library winner of the second serenade on LSO live.
