Nicely done. I'm going to revisit Boult, Jochum/BPO, Furtwangler and Toscanini!

May have buy Jurowski. And was surprised at how very good the Haitink was. Philharmonia/Karajan also nice in the 1st extract (and stereo, not mono).

Alison, have you ever requested odds from your local friendly Betfred or whoever on such things as the choice of the reviewer on BAL? The next BPO conductor might be a good one.

Did Sir Simon Rattle's new BPO recording get a mention at all?

(Tears up betting slip and goes off to play Loughran.)

An enjoyable survey. I streamed the Jurowski earlier this week via Qobuz and feel it is a worthy winner. I only have Klemperer in the new Brahms box set on EMI. Abbado I know and would buy if the whole cycle were more reasonably priced.

Why did he not discount the Furtwangler on grounds of sound before wasting playing time. The LPO Furtwangler (1951) which was on an Ace of Clubs LP has never appeared on CD to my knowledge - the sound was better than the examples played from the VPO version.

I believe it was counted among the "good but not distinguished" at the end of the survey, when SJ explained those omitted thus far.

Excellent BAL, I've been inspired to purchase two more titles in the King Crimson 40th anniversary series. For those interested the Hatink LSO disc, including a nice double concerto, is ÂŁ3.99 at the grocers.

                  [QUOTE=Caliban;299912]
Thanks Alison (in your last line, is that "you will win..."?)

                  But why would you ever

                  Yes, duly corrected.

The case of this afternoon's Derby favourite provides a good example.

In the last few weeks he has traded odds ON at prices in the region of 4-5 and 10-11.

Now, on the morning of the race the market has changed and he is trading at odds AGAINST.

ie the second number is smaller than the first. Various prices have been available this morning

                  such as 5-4, 11-8, 6-4 and even 7-4.

So there you have odds on and odds against explained - perhaps not that well.

Anyone like me who thinks the favourite will win the Derby are delighted to see him trading at odds against.

Given the size of the field Jurowki should have been significantly odds against in BaL but having seen SJ's

review in BBCMM that version was a fair bet to win !

As far as I know there's only the one Rattle recording from several years ago but you may be in the know Mr Pee - is there a later one?

The first one fell into the 'very good but not stellar' category with Abbado and Alsop

but i like the sound of the cellos in the ORR/Gardiner Brahms .... anyway great thread and an exciting listen but he did not mention the repeats!

I might just get the Jurowski!

No, that's the one, from 2009. I nearly edited "new" to "recent", but it still feels like a new recording to me! And a bloomin' good one it is too!

Missed it but will catch up later - sounds a good 'un!

Don't suppose Ancerl or Keilberth were among the runners & riders...?

I wasn't able to listen this morning.

Was Szell was a non runner ? (still my fave though) so my stake all goes on Chopin in the Derby.

Yes, he wasn't: good luck with Chopin.
