I'm so glad Rob gave a nod to young Nicola Benedetti. She really has been a strong advocate for this work.

I wonder why Ida H never appears to have recorded it - was it in her repertoire ? She is of course of Polish birth.

Listening to the BAL it is Wilkomirska and Danczowska that stand out in particular , Zimmermann's tone I don't like cannot put my finger on it why. It just sounds a bit cold to me.

I have been fortunate enough to get a copy of the Wilkomirska/Rowicki from Amazon marketplace for only a few quid . It is a mesmerising performance , just as I remembered it to be . Right to the top of my list.

Wilkomirska really gets inside the work doesn't she. I have several other versions (in better sound) but none catches the soul of the piece as well. Mind I have still to hear the Danczowska. I totally agree about Zimmermann, it's good clean playing but it doesn't move me at all.

Just a quick question; is Amazon Marketplace the same thing as when one simply goes to Amazon.co.uk and searches for a particular cd?

My reason for asking is that I looked for the Wilkomirska/Rowicki and they only had a few - vinyls, I think at bonkersly high prices........ hence my question, above.

            thanks

I have just listened through, and I actually feel that his 'tone' and style, if you like, is very well-suited to the music. The cold edge seems to enhance the whole experience.....

Each to their own VN - there is ethereal and there is bloodless and I find him to close to the latter .

Amazon marketplace sellers are just the alternatives listed compared to Amazon's own price . I found it just by searching szymanowski violin concerto no 1 and there was a Vol3 Polskie Nagrania version and the picture showed it was the Wilkomirska. Unfortunately, when I looked again last night the prices had rocketed again.

Not sure about this CD but I did buy Bronislaw Gimpel's Wieniawski (on Muza) from a website in Poland. My browser did the translations into English and I got a separate bill for P&P but all in all it worked fine and I've been waiting for it to appear on CD for years so I'm very pleased.

Just nudging back to this thread; I like Zimmerman's interpretation of Britten's violin concerto also on this CD. Naturally the Decca and EMI versions with Lubotsky and Haendel respectively are unsurpassable, but they say "variety is the spice of life"........

I agree and to digress I should recommend strongly Lorraine McAslan's old Collins recording of the piece which has reappeared on Naxos .McAslan is one of those violinists who it seems now being over 40 is ignored by concert promoters looking for the latest young glamorous violinist , despite her wonderful playing .

Thanks Barbirollians, I will check this one out - Naxos so often seem to come up roses where one least expects it!

Yes, I've always liked her playing. I suspect her 'problem' is that she doesn't produce a huge sound and therefor her artistry is more suited to chamber music but she has quite a pedigree having studied with Isaac Stern. She does seem to have carved a niche for herself recording violin concertos by lesser known composers. There's alo a lovely recording of her playing the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante with Ross Pople and a London Orchestra.

I once played with her in Harry Legge's Rehearsal Orchestra in Edinburgh where she played the Elgar concerto very well indeed.

I imagine she would be marvellous in the Mendelssohn Concerto. I strongly recommend that Dutton CD of the Arthur Benjamin concerto coupled with the Romantic Fantasy for violin and viola - an old Heifestz/Primrose favourite apparently.

Just listening to the Danczowska - it is marvellous . Odd she recorded so little - that record with Zimerman of the Franck Sonata and Szymanowski is magical .

I've often wondered what became of her. She seemed to disappear after that wonderful recording.
