    - and in Chamber Music duos; possibly coming to your local Music Socity soon!

One of our best pianists, IMO: is there a "inexplicably neglected pianists" Thread anywhere?

The Byron Janis in Eine's list is presumably the recording with the Moscow Radio Symphony Orch under Rozhdestvensky from 1963.

One absent from the list is Tamas Vasary with the Bamberg SO under Prohaska (presumably nla).

I'll give them both a spin this arvo.

I wish Argerich had turned her hands to the Second Concerto her First - either in the 1960s version with Abbado but most of all the live one on her recent concertos from Lugano set is spectacular . The latter might convert anyone to Liszt.

I've owned the Richter LP for 30+ years and confess to still enjoying Liszt pf concs despite all the flak hereabouts. More recently I've added the Naxos CD by Nebolsin/RLPO/Petrenko (decent but not startling) but the LMP CD racks have also yielded 3 Laserlight CDs from c1990 by Jeno Jando/Budapest SO/Andras Ligeti in what was presumably then an attempt at a 'Complete Liszt concertante pf works' set - but no 3rd Concerto of course. [For Caliban's and others' sheer pleasure it includes such essentials as the Grand fantasie symphonique on Berlioz's 'Lelio']

Seems it's NLA: does anyone have a view on these recordings before I re-spin it?? Jando is a very decent Liszt player IMHO, judging by his Naxos Annees de pelerinage- Italie.
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

I have Josef Bulva with the Radio Luxembourg Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Nazareth.

I just can't imagine this work being played by the Radio Luxembourg we once had to endure over here.

Well after all the great comments I am definitely going to listen tomorrow. For me, unfortunately, I have never been interested in the Liszt Piano Concerto's. I don't know why. I think they are technically stunning but have never really gotten into them. This comes from a huge fan of Martha Argerich, who has as previously stated only recorded Number 1. I do have the Zimmerman recordings as well. So hopefully, tomorrow, will change that.

I have Krystian Zimerman / BSO / Ozawa and the recent Barenboim / Staatskapelle Berlin / Boulez disc, which is very good IMO. I like the concertos, but I like Liszt more and more the more Liszt I discover.

I heard Zimerman play no. 2 with the LSO and Gary Bertini at the Festival Hall in the 1980s. Fabulous concert, with a searing account of Mahler 6 after the interval.

                    Ho Eine Alpensinfonie,
I really like the "3rd" concerto - it's based upon the Rondo and Allegro di Bravoure which he wrote in his teens. There are several recordings available - the first on I got was on ASV and the pianist is Steven Mayer who is very good. It's also got De Profundis and the early version of Totentanz. You might be able to download it cheaply or find a secondhand copy somewhere for a few pennies.
Failing that, Leslie Howard is excellent on Hyperion.
                    Best regards,
                    Jonathan

LMP, I have the disc containing the Lelio fantasy, as well as the "Ruins of Athens" fantasy and Malediction. Haven't played it for years, but I seem to recall enjoying it - good playing and adequate recording IIRC. If I get the chance, I'll play it later this evening - thanks for reminding me of it

Aah I was hoping you had discovered an Argerich Liszt 2 . I bet it would be sensational .

An enjoyable BAL albeit i thought the dismissal of the Richter/Kondrashin bizarre- tame it isn't even if it is not as wild as the live performance .

Zimerman/Ozawa is very good though . Listened to Brendel/Haitink however this morning and I suspect that excellent musical performance would be the one to try and convert those who dislike the virtuosity required for Liszt or his "flashiness".

Although Argerich is a wonderful pianist and musician there are large gaps in her discography such as Both the Brahms concertos and the 'Emperor' to name but three. Such a shame.
