For the last Baroque Spring edition, Caroline Gill joins Andrew in the studio to discuss Bach's Sonatas for violin and keyboard, and makes a recommendation.

    Everything will be recommended!

Miserable news. And Andrew McGregor will talk all over the guest he's brought in, despite the fact that they are supposed to be the expert in that repertoire.

He tried that on recently in a piano round-up with Iain Burnside who simply refused to play ball - Burnside kept leaving long pauses after McGregor had run down and then would say "Now look ..."

Though Nice Guy Calibosh will be pleased with April 13th: Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2.

That's right, Bryn. Although these listings aren't always 100% accurate. There you go, Calibosh - a glimmer of hope!

Just caught up with this thread. I have recordings made in the late 1980s by Ruth Waterman and Morey Ritt for the Meridian label - have to confess I haven't listened to them for ages (overshadowed by the solo sonatas and partitas, I suppose), but I recall finding them quite satisfying.

Actually, I have no idea what Liszt PC#2 is like, might be interesting - at least it's not #1 or some orchestral clap-trap....

Happily, the listing turns out to have been wrong in that regard!

My hackles went onto "orange alert" when she made the comment about "a nice balance between the intellectual and the human" (oh, yeah! Nothing to do with each other, have they?! - I suppose that's what happens when you work for R3!) but her comments elsewhen seem on the ball: poised, involved, analytical, cooly enthusiastic. My kind of reviewer!

Agreed. A pleasing depth and breadth to her knowledge.

Yet no mention thus far of my favourite, Catherine Manson/Ton Koopman (Challenge Classics). Nor the new release by Chiari Banchini/Jörg-Andreas Böttiger (ZigZag). Nor Podger/Pinnock (Channel Classics).
