And yet Leonhardt delighted in the rich colours of Rameau's theatre works - you have only to hear his recordings of "Pygmalion" and "Zais" to witness that.

I had rather thought that BBM was referring to rthe BBC website occasionally declaring the winner before the programme.

In nearly fifty years of collecting, and having always enjoyed Handel, I've never owned these works.

                  So... to be put right.

Question 1: piano or harpsichord? Well, both, obviously. But which first?

                  And by whom?

Looking forward greatly to Saturday morning.

Much as I love the selction of suites on Perahia's disc, the harpsichord provides a far richer palette of colours for me in this music. The Russian duo's performance, while stunning pianistically, is uncompetitive purely from a sonic perspective.

Sophie Yates has an ideal combination of technical facility, a great instrument and a real flair for the repertoire. In fact, I'm going to have a flutter on her at 10-1.

Well Handel wrote 'em for Harpsichord and much of the ornamentation was written with this in mind (and can sound fussy on the piano). So for me the choice is reasonably clear, though I shall continue to play them on the piano myself.

Highly informative so far, with interesting comparisons between instruments.

Except that much the most interesting excerpt was the dismissed Richter !

What, the one where he held the opening note for a horribly long time?! I found that (and the "phlegmatic" audience noise) distinctly off-putting.
