BaL 2.03.13 - Stravinsky's Firebird Suite

Indeed, who'd of thunked it?

How many composers conducting their own work has BaL chosen before this one I wonder. Probably lots but I'm quite new to this game so I'll leave it up the old lags to tell us.

I got that 1946 recording in its Philips LP manifestation in the early to mid '60s. It is indeed rather special, though I do totally disagree with Mival regarding the whole ballet score as a concert work. I think it works very well and much prefer it to any of the suites derived from it. Must have a list to yesterday afternoon's BBCPO broadcast.

I, too, bought it as one of my first LPs in the mid '50s (and still have it, Philips A 01307 L), so it was gratifying to hear it chosen.

It has been on CD before, in one of the Andante Stravinsky boxes (Volume 3, 99487 1960-2) which I also have, though I'm not quite sure where at the moment.

I wonder what else will be in the mentioned new Sony release later in March. I can't seem to find any reference to it online yet.

Ditto re. the Andante book/box, except that I know exactly where mine is.

I keep hoping to find Vol. 1 at a sensible price but will probably have to stick with just Vol's* 2 and 3.
