It's a work I've struggled and struggled to like. Pappano's live account drew me in more than most. I then fossicked about in my 're-sell' box for the Boulez and gave it another go the other day and found myself actually engaged. The sonic detail, so crucial in Mahler, is very impressive. Indeed, I think it gets pretty much everything right without over-egging anything or doing anything one might find controversial, such as Barbirolli's trudging opening. I have that recording, too. A remarkable account but I'd hardly say it's a library recommendation. The Boulez, however, could well be.

"This movement is too long and too noisy..." quoth Julian Johnson about the 4th Movement. My ears pricked up. That's exactly how I've always felt! I always sort of dread the sheer ordeal of getting through it. It's always felt like something to be endured rather than enjoyed.

Where the chuff did Boulez go?!
Two non-starters (Haitink and another name I missed) get mentioned at the end without any previous mention or excerpts played?! Curiouser and curiouser...
Kudos to JJ for the Ivan Fischer recommendation, tho'. I would commend him to every Mahlerian. Gorgeous detailed sonics and a clarity of vision of each work thus far. His 4th is unsurpassed, I feel.
It's called CD Review not DVD Review.
