Just picked up this long running thread.
I was playing in that Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra recording with Jascha Horenstein.
We had separate rehearsal sessions for strings and winds prior to putting it all together and Horenstein took no prisoners during those rehearsals.
I remember one young lady leaving the hall in tears. (Her fault, she laughed in the wrong place and "Horrors" was not amused.)
It was my first acquaintance with that particular symphony and I remember that we were all on edge, but the result (we also performed it in the Royal Festival Hall) was impressive.

Can you remember what the hammer was like?"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

From my 20 or so versions I nominate VPO/Boulez as the pick.
A fine 'central' sort of reading, without any weaknesses, ideal for a BaL selection.

(I don't recall Boulez's Vienna recording of the 6th falling short in the mustard cutting department.)

It's the clearheadedness which yet manages to be intense and alive; the VPO at its very considerable best.
