I hope the concert was better than his Mahler recordings !

Just picked up this long running thread.

I was playing in that Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra recording with Jascha Horenstein.

We had separate rehearsal sessions for strings and winds prior to putting it all together and Horenstein took no prisoners during those rehearsals.
I remember one young lady leaving the hall in tears. (Her fault, she laughed in the wrong place and "Horrors" was not amused.)

It was my first acquaintance with that particular symphony and I remember that we were all on edge, but the result (we also performed it in the Royal Festival Hall) was impressive.

Can you remember what the hammer was like?

              The other one is BPO/Karajan...
I thought Dohnanyi had only recorded the 6th with the Cleveland Orchestra, Akiralx?

You are quite correct. It is indeed the Cleveland.

Nearly 100 messages and not even under starters orders.

From my 20 or so versions I nominate VPO/Boulez as the pick.

A fine 'central' sort of reading, without any weaknesses, ideal for a BaL selection.

That's the thing about this work - central readings don't cut the mustard ! I have been getting to know the Bernstein CBS 6 - the polar opposite of Barbirolli but really exciting .

Such a shame that Sir Roger Norrington has not directed a recorded performance of the 6th.

I've just picked up a Sir Roger Tchaikovsky 5/Nutcracker from a charity shop and looking forward to it! I wonder if any new releases of anything are in the pipeline.

True. I'd hoped for a Roger Norrington / Stuttgart Mahler 7, also.

(I don't recall Boulez's Vienna recording of the 6th falling short in the mustard cutting department.)

A recording of Schubert 4 and 5 came out from Hänssler last September (UK release).

So true. Central is probably the wrong word.

It's the clearheadedness which yet manages to be intense and alive; the VPO at its very considerable best.
