Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
I was playing in that Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra recording with Jascha Horenstein.
We had separate rehearsal sessions for strings and winds prior to putting it all together and Horenstein took no prisoners during those rehearsals.
I remember one young lady leaving the hall in tears. (Her fault, she laughed in the wrong place and "Horrors" was not amused.)
It was my first acquaintance with that particular symphony and I remember that we were all on edge, but the result (we also performed it in the Royal Festival Hall) was impressive.

From my 20 or so versions I nominate VPO/Boulez as the pick.
A fine 'central' sort of reading, without any weaknesses, ideal for a BaL selection.
That's the thing about this work - central readings don't cut the mustard ! I have been getting to know the Bernstein CBS 6 - the polar opposite of Barbirolli but really exciting .
I've just picked up a Sir Roger Tchaikovsky 5/Nutcracker from a charity shop and looking forward to it! I wonder if any new releases of anything are in the pipeline.

A recording of Schubert 4 and 5 came out from Hänssler last September (UK release).
