I think I should probably buy the Szell - his Mahler 4 is a delight .
The live Testament Barbirolli - really is fabulous it should be in the collection of every lover of this symphony - well so should his studio version but I am biased.
I should like Chailly to record it again - his Proms performance was excellent.Last edited by Barbirollians; 09-02-13, 21:58.

My toddler evidently approves of the Barbirolli ! When he pressed the remote control this afternoon and the opening movement came on he marched round the living room and objected with remarks of " More " tapping the speakers when I turned it off - trying to watch the rugby !
I am reminded that I forgot about the Mitropoulos on the Great Conductors series - a terrific account of the work.

I am still waiting for the return of my copies of the first two U2 albums, Hong Kong Garden by Siouxsie, and a free album that came with the Skids third LP.
Not that I hold a grudge. They just NEVER come back.
(hope you get the Mahler back, ER, sure you will !!)I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
I am not a number, I am a free man.

However, to my eternal shame, I never returned the 12" copy of Alexi Sayle's "Ullo John! Gotta New Motor" to the guy that lent it to me circa 1983.
As more time passed, the harder it got to sensibly return it. The guy that lent it to me died in a car crash in Epping Forest four years ago.

Quick note to recommend Kondrashin to Mahlerian eager-beavers who want another go... SWR better recorded, but Leningrad Phil more intense, VERY fast (65'40 or 68'24 without repeat), was going to say if you like truculence a la Horenstein/Barbirolli/Thom Sanderling then not for you, but why not shock yourself with the utter opposite!
Get the Leningrad one, shocking as a sixth should be.

Probably straying well off topic here, I suppose, but Gramex is responsible for a huge pile of second-hands accumulated in London trips over several Prom seasons."The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink
