I didn't listen to this BaL on the grounds that with 34 versions on my groaning shelves I hardly need another. However, Fischer's is one absentee so another one is called for! If one is counting the Abbado/Lucerne then thst's another one to my tally as I failed to include it. Likewise, Bernstein's DVD so I have 36. After his very fine Proms performance last year, I'm hoping that Chailly seizes the chance to have another go.

I was present at the 1983 Tennstedt Prom and will never forget it. Never likely to be a BaL recommendation, I suppose, but a searingly intense performance that doesn't deserve to be neglected.

Would that be two or three times during the final movement?

            Did you attend the concerts?

The CD is worrying, taken out of the concert context, methinks.

No I didn't, I did get to his 4th and 5th at the proms.

I wish I had heard his sixth live though.

As I thought to! With players gathered together especially for Maestro Abbado, and with especially, the way Abbado has a particular feel for Mahler's music, I am glad that this version was chosen. I expect the Berliners were not far behind?

Right, the Berliners did get a mention as a - heaven forbid! - CD version. How he can recommend a DVD for the winning BaL is anyone's guess?! The actual nominated CD is, by rights, Ivan Fischer...a worthy modern Mahlerian you should investigate, BBM. Superb sonics and an enlightening ("clean") vision of the works.

Anyone taking a punt on Abbado in Lucerne would've got their money back - but not much profit as it was the Favourite. Anyone putting an "Each-Way" on Fischer will be very happy. Karajan, Bernstein, Barbirolli punters all go home with much lighter pockets.

                          Mugs game.

                          Betting, not Mahler.

What about those who backed Boulez? He appeared to be leading at several points but seems to have fallen at the final hurdle, tho' we never found out why!

Didn't JJ at one point put the Boulez up as the "opposite" of the Sinopoli? (ie, as a meticulous presentation of the score, but lacking that last, essential ounce of "meaning it" that he thought was necessary? - Paraphrasing here, and I've forgotten the actual vocabulary; and didn't agree with either assessment.)

I second that. I heard the Sixth for the first time at this Prom and I found it stunning. It made sense to me even at first hearing and without knowing anything about it beforehand. And I could not understand all the talk of tragedy and desolation, when it was such a celebration of, well, the life, the universe, and everything. Until I heard the BaL, that is - hearing the vastly different interpretations of the finale was illuminating indeed! For me, none of the performances mentioned today matched Chailly's Prom - I am pretty certain that had I heard a different performance first I wouldn't be so hooked on the piece today.
