The Philips Complete Chamber Music Box was one of the first bumper editions I bought (dated 1996 on the box). Since then the Beaux Arts recording of Op 8 has been a frequent listen for me. The only other version I have is the Oistrakh Trio on the 10 CD Brilliant box. I agree with with the blurb there which describes the set as "must-have".

Whoops - the CD Review newsletter has published Ian Burnside's top choice a little prematurely!

Just what I thought, Ostuni! Like someone peeking in the Crimbo pressy before the big day - the rotters! Hope this was a slip-up and not a new practice.

It didn't upset me this week as much as it would normally - I'm going to have to miss the programme since I'll be just boarding a plane at the time...

Thanks, Am! A week's Langlauf in the Tirol: a battle between calories expended on the trails, and those gained from the dumplings.

What is this like compared to his piano quartets?

Has happened several times. The newsletter is presumably compiled by CD Review staff who ought to engage their brains.

The totally infuriating Ian Burnside - that voice dropping away to almost total inaudibility at the end of almost every phrase. No doubt a fantastic musician. but a real pain to listen to - sudden rises, then total fade out.

Back in the day any half decent producer would have picked up this and bawled him out for it. Totally unacceptable, particularly for anyone listening in the car, on the move, or assailed by sundry household ambient interruptions...

Sadly I must agree - he's intelligent, full of professional insights, just what I need in a guide but oh dear the fluctuations in volume & pitch

Interrupted by small daughter, I missed the pulling-up on the run-in of the Gould Trio, whose set I recently bought after their live performance of this work in Truro. Why did Mr Burnside dispense with them?

I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

I enjoyed this BaL, and do not share the reservations about Mr Burnside. I learned quite a lot about the two versions of the trio, and shall pobably invest in his first choice, the Pires and colleagues recording, to accompany my Beaux Arts CD, which like Mr Burnside, I now find 'disappointing' by comparison.
Incidetally, interesting that we have 50 posts already on Mahler 6, and only 20+ on Brahms! Why is it that Mahler attacts more posts than almost any other composer?

Perhaps even more "interesting" - Brahms has now been overtaken by courgettes!
