The Philips Complete Chamber Music Box was one of the first bumper editions I bought (dated 1996 on the box). Since then the Beaux Arts recording of Op 8 has been a frequent listen for me. The only other version I have is the Oistrakh Trio on the 10 CD Brilliant box. I agree with with the blurb there which describes the set as "must-have".

Back in the day any half decent producer would have picked up this and bawled him out for it. Totally unacceptable, particularly for anyone listening in the car, on the move, or assailed by sundry household ambient interruptions...

Interrupted by small daughter, I missed the pulling-up on the run-in of the Gould Trio, whose set I recently bought after their live performance of this work in Truro. Why did Mr Burnside dispense with them?Last edited by LeMartinPecheur; 09-02-13, 14:26.I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

I enjoyed this BaL, and do not share the reservations about Mr Burnside. I learned quite a lot about the two versions of the trio, and shall pobably invest in his first choice, the Pires and colleagues recording, to accompany my Beaux Arts CD, which like Mr Burnside, I now find 'disappointing' by comparison.
Incidetally, interesting that we have 50 posts already on Mahler 6, and only 20+ on Brahms! Why is it that Mahler attacts more posts than almost any other composer?
