Au cointreau, Bbm; the only HIPP to feature in the final running was the earlier Herreweghe (which fell at the final hurdle because it didn't struggle enough), 'tho' the Hanover Band also got mentioned in dispatches. If JEGgers was mentioned at all, I missed it.

The winners were Toscanini (BBC Legends), Aberdeen Otto and, taking the trophy, Guilini on EMI with Harper/Baker/Tear & Sotin. I've not heard this in nearly 30 years, but I always had a problem with it that emerged from the excerpts this morning, too. At first I found the attention to detail very impressive, but as the performance progresses, I found these increasingly interrupting the momentum of the Music. I shall listen to the extended sample on Monday, but after this BaL (which I hugely enjoyed) I think I'll stick with Karajan and JEGgers - 'tho' I might be tempted by the Herreweghe, if I find it "on offer".

(Oh, yes; the Krauss is awe-insiring, too; but I didn't hear it mentioned - NLA?)

This work has meant a lot to me for over 40 years - at times even sustaining me when downhearted. A couple of years ago I actually sang in it in an amateur choir, which deepened my appreciation of the work still further. I started with it as a student with the Böhm/BPO mono version on a cheapo Heliodor LP and then also got the Karajan/Schwarzkopf, mentioned today, and Toscanini, which I love. On CD I have acquired Bernstein/Concertgebouw, JEG, Herrweghe and Colin Davis and therefore have many bases covered. I am tempted by Giulini though not necessarily by the extracts played today - especially since it is on a cheap label and has Janet Baker + C major Mass.

Nice of you to compliment me on my badinage, sir.

This Harmonia Mundi 'Gold Edition' re-release is one of the most sumptuously packaged discs I've ever procured...I must get round to re-appraising it soon.

I don't know the Harnoncourt recording but a highlight concert of the year was his Misssa Solemnis at the Barbican with Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Netherlands Radio Choir. It may have been his last UK appearance and after the performance he was awarded the Royal PhilharmonicSociety Gold Medal.
(Excellent soloists included Marlis Petersen whose new Goethe Lieder disc is another highlight of the year.)

The as yet unrecorded Bernard Haitink in Beethoven Missa Solemnis with BRSO (2003 live)

I've only heard it once, when it was first issued. Didn't really do much for me (and I didn't buy it) - I "remember" [!it is 20 years ago!] that the soloists weren't the best around, and there was a "same-iness" about the different movements (the exact opposite of Guilini's approach, if I'm remembering correctly) that I found wearing. On Saturday, it was included in the "also-rans" but failed to reach the final stretch. (Mind you, neither did either of my favourites!)

I listened to the Giulini excerpts played today. I enjoyed the singing but not the slow tempi and the sound was less than vivid.

I like the Harnoncourt -i think he is much better in large choral works that in purely orchestral. His Schumann Parados et Peri was superb too .

I only have the Solti as well on cassette . That never did much for me .

May well investigate the Giulini but I agree the Klemperer came across very impressively.
