Brautigam's fortepiano recordings of Mozart's sonatas are a revelation. Recommended to those who baulk at HIP recordings. The sound is lush and full, not brittle and plinky, and the playing is equally pleasing o'the ear. He gets my vote in K.310.

Another 8, Thropple - great to see you back.

Hugh Canning raved in the ST about the Murray Perahia recording when it first came out around 1992, and very good it is too. Recorded in the late lamented Sofiensaal, coupled with K331 and K533/494. My only other recording is the sublime Lipatti (1947 recording).

Another case which would benefit from more extended Interpretations on Record treatment - lots won't get a look-in here.

looking at that list, and thinking about the many works that have never been recorded, or only rarely, it seems a bit of a misdirection of human endeavour is happening somewhere.
Anyway, be that as it may, when they say "available recordings", what are the criteria?

My much loved Carmen Piazzini set isn't listed...not sure if its currently listed by any record company, though it can be bought via amazon.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

                Lipatti by a country mile

Followed by Kempff, Goode and the later Brendel for me.

I generally include those recordings that are available at a sensible price. When Amazon advertises a single disc for £40 upwards, it's clearly not a current issue.

I was quite relieved last week when I woke up on Friday morning, checked the Radio 3 website and found it was Berlioz's Les Troyens , on BaL with only a handful of recordings.

I have this (contained in 2 comlplete sonatas sets) by Klien and Barenboim. More than happy with both.

Klien is my favourite since Turnabout LP days. I snapped up the complete Vox set with glee when it appeared on CD nearly 20 years ago. I have just played K310 to refresh my memory - beautiful articulation with every note as clear as a bell.

I also like Leon McCawley with a rather fuller sound which my wife bought me as a birthday present a few years ago.

That will be a list! I have Perlemuter's early Vox recording (rather good); Badura-Skoda on 'fortepiano' and on a set as a tribute to Lipatti's famous recital (which I also have). And Brendel. Looking forward to Bezuidenhout recording it.

Likewise Gurnemanz - a great bargain at the time, glad to see it is still available. Klien's playing is clean, limpid, expressive and I haven't heard better.

I rarely get to hear BaL live, but may listen again - a short piece such as this should allow for some interesting detailed comparisons.
