Bohm / BPO and CoE / Abbado have long been treasured recordings. An initial encounter with Bamberg / Nott sounds like it could prove rewarding.

Oh, and there's another Harnoncourt (live) reading from 1996, with the Berlin Phil on Teldec, c/w Schumann's 4th. The latter is the more frequently heard revision - Harnoncourt gave us the original 4th with his terrific COE Schumann cycle.
The two Berlin 4ths are excellent!

Yes, the Berlin Harnoncourt recordings are great, perhaps my favourite for both works.

I only have BPO/Bohm and BPO/Karajan in this and happy with both, especially Bohm, whose cycle is superb. However, RW will probably dismiss both.

Played my Kertesz. It's as though I never listened to this symphony before. And I certainly don't recall the last time it was played!

And don't forget the truly excellent reading from Giulini in Chicago, as lauded by Rob C. in the Spirit of Schubert Week http://www.amazon.co.uk/Giulini-Amer...2235569&sr=8-3. I bought it on the strength of his praise and have not been disappointed: wonderfully intense version. It lingered in my mind for days after the first hearing.

Van Beinum and Kertesz are my runners-up.
