Bohm / BPO and CoE / Abbado have long been treasured recordings. An initial encounter with Bamberg / Nott sounds like it could prove rewarding.

The two Berlin 4ths are excellent!
Yes, the Berlin Harnoncourt recordings are great, perhaps my favourite for both works.

I only have BPO/Bohm and BPO/Karajan in this and happy with both, especially Bohm, whose cycle is superb. However, RW will probably dismiss both.

It's nearly always Abbado's recordings that are recommended (probably because they tend to be rather good).

Very true. I keep on meaning to get the Abbado set.

Played my Kertesz. It's as though I never listened to this symphony before. And I certainly don't recall the last time it was played!

And don't forget the truly excellent reading from Giulini in Chicago, as lauded by Rob C. in the Spirit of Schubert Week http://www.amazon.co.uk/Giulini-Amer...2235569&sr=8-3. I bought it on the strength of his praise and have not been disappointed: wonderfully intense version. It lingered in my mind for days after the first hearing.

Van Beinum and Kertesz are my runners-up.

                      Abbado/ Chamber Orch of Europe:
Extract from 4th mvt - quite comical for the wrong reason - a ridiculously wobbly bassoon.

Effectively 2 recommendations, which seems the best way.
