I listened to part of Karajan's 1977 recording with Anna Tomowa-Sintow/Jose van Dam/Wiener Singverein/BPO this afternoon, the recording through whih I first got to know the work. I'm afraid I found it turgid, taking 10 minutes longer than Gardiner I. On the strenght of the brief snippet I heard this morning, I shall invetigate Gardiner II

I often buy recordings on the basis of just one enthusiastic review, even though I know that an individual critic's reaction can never be exactly the same as mine and that I might be disappointed. Luckily the internet allows us to take into account the views of a range of critics before parting with our cash.
It is always going to be risky to rely completely on the views of one fickle critic, but it is surely also risky to assume that a particular critic (eg TH) is always going to be completely out of sync (or indeed in sync) with our own personal preferences.

I just listened on i-player to the Monday morning broadcast of the BaL choice of this work and a single movement, "Denn alles Fleisch ist wie als Gras" was played. The whole point of this slot was to enable listeners to listen to the whole recording (or, in large works such as operas, a longish extract). Not that long back I recall the broadcast of the work was started before 11 a.m. to allow the whole work to be played. What's the point of having it simply as a bleeding chunk among many other bleeding chunks? It's not as though anything particularly important is being played in the rest of the programme (or will not be repeated in the very near future).

(PS, are you related to Noggin the Nog? That would be cool,he was ace).
Must say, I managed to miss the complete version of the top choice on this work...I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
I am not a number, I am a free man.
