I listened to part of Karajan's 1977 recording with Anna Tomowa-Sintow/Jose van Dam/Wiener Singverein/BPO this afternoon, the recording through whih I first got to know the work. I'm afraid I found it turgid, taking 10 minutes longer than Gardiner I. On the strenght of the brief snippet I heard this morning, I shall invetigate Gardiner II

I love critics like that - so reliable

Thanks, fhg - my attention must have wandered then. I heard him mention and praise the Klemperer version near the end of the review.

            Point taken on TH...

I often buy recordings on the basis of just one enthusiastic review, even though I know that an individual critic's reaction can never be exactly the same as mine and that I might be disappointed. Luckily the internet allows us to take into account the views of a range of critics before parting with our cash.

It is always going to be risky to rely completely on the views of one fickle critic, but it is surely also risky to assume that a particular critic (eg TH) is always going to be completely out of sync (or indeed in sync) with our own personal preferences.

To be fair to Trevor Harvey though he raved about Boult's Schubert 9 !

Suspect that may have been ferney's point, Eine.

Apologies again - and serves me right for attempting heavy irony. My comment was meant to express my shock that not one of these four versions was even mentioned in passing in this BaL. No slight on your (as ever) excellent cataloguing skills intended, Alpie.

I think I must have missed the point.

I just listened on i-player to the Monday morning broadcast of the BaL choice of this work and a single movement, "Denn alles Fleisch ist wie als Gras" was played. The whole point of this slot was to enable listeners to listen to the whole recording (or, in large works such as operas, a longish extract). Not that long back I recall the broadcast of the work was started before 11 a.m. to allow the whole work to be played. What's the point of having it simply as a bleeding chunk among many other bleeding chunks? It's not as though anything particularly important is being played in the rest of the programme (or will not be repeated in the very near future).

Here, here. Is there anywhere we can write to and complain? I know we'll only get the copy and paste response but it'll probably be registered somewhere in their all important stats.
