    Saly - cannot find a BBCMM recording unless it was one of the few I haven't got whilst I lapsed my membership for a few months. The above link shows some of the versions available. The link below lists all the BBCMM CDs.

      Thanks a lot cloughie - it is Rattle and the Berliner Phil,with five symphonies. I must get some racks or something for my unsorted CDs No room for shelves either.

            I too, am glad things are back to normal with CD Review. I don't know this work and will have a listen. Haydn is very scarce in my collection so it will be good to hear. Maybe I've missed something.

              Likewise, I have managed to avoid ever hearing this piece, knowingly at least. It will be an interesting opportunity for discovery.

                Anyone hear this? A good start to the new season, I thought - excellent work, judiciously reviewed. Think I'll get the OAE version, but the Norrington sounded very good, too - particularly in the more flowing Andante.

                  Very nice review, indeed! My preference goes to Norrington (over Abbado, that is): Abbado's recording to me has too much vibrato, sounds too romantic to me, and I do like Norrington's approach to tempo annotations that is not biased by traditions that have crept in over the late 19th and the early 20th centuries. He documents this nicely in his comments that are included with his Stuttgart Beethoven cycle!

                    I only caught the last 20 mins - did Boehm DG get a mention?

                      I don't think so, LMP, though few older recordings got played (no Bernstein, Dorati, Vegh). Kempe with the BRSO did appear in a brief extract, but was quickly dismissed. I also didn't hear any mention of Brüggen or Harnoncourt.

                      I quite liked the Nicolic/Netherlands Chamber Orchestra version, though a mite quick in the slow movement - Norrington's tempo better here imo.

                      Bernstein in a concert performance with the VPO can be seen on youtube here (for those who were disappointed by Bernstein's omission from this review).

                          Take no notice! There is strong division on this issue, but some of us feel villified for NOT falling over and worshipping this self-publicist.

                            I'm not worried: if somebody does not like the word Voldemort — sorry, N*rr*ngt*n — , then that's his/her problem, not mine; I take the freedom to express my opinion, but if somebody starts arguing, I'm unlikely to enter that argument: I don't feel like educating people ...

                                I quite enjoyed the usual format of CD Review again,after the summer break.

                                The review of the Haydn was especially interesting and alkso as well as CoE/Abbado being chosen. The reviewer said this was old fashioned way of interpretating Haydn but I thought no it's not, really quite refreshing.
