I started listening thinking there was no way he was going to choose my favourite that live Barenboim Zukerman and Du pre version ! I was delighted he did . Wonderful performance and coming as it did right at the end of du Pre's career gives an inkling of what a loss to music her enforced retirement was .What might she have given us had she been granted a normal span ?

I enjoyed seeing and hearing Jackie, Barenboim and Zukerman at the Brighton Music Festival and will never forget them. But, at last, I've got round to listening to their Tchaikovsky op 50 and still prefer my old LP of the Suk Trio,c.1977. I thought the chosen performance pulled the music around too muchfor me. There is enough emotion in the work itself and the Suk performance lets it speak for itself IMHO.

A work I have just discovered thanks to Petrushka's Tchaikovsky - Jurowski/LPO thread, which encouraged me to give this composer a try and overcome the mental block created in by NSSS: Nutcracker Suite Saturation Syndrome.

I'm not sure if the version I've been listening to was considered in this BaL, but it's a very passionate and well-recorded performance by the Smetana Trio.

I have Lang Lang, Repin, Maisky. It was slated by BAL for Lang Lang's self indulgent playing but I love it - passionate with great rapport between the three musicians.

I have an excellent recording with the same paring from the Vienna Piano Trio on MDG which does not appear to have been mentioned here. I didn't hear the review but assume it must have been discussed. A great addition to the classic Oistrakh Trio from 1948 in rather thin sound.

It is also the Gramophone choice in their recent survey of Tchaikovsky on the website: http://www.gramophone.co.uk/editoria...kys-piano-trio

I think the reviewer was bang on in choosing the Du Pre? Zukerman and Barenboim . It is a marvellous performance.

It was on EMI Gemini with Zukerman and Barenboim in the last four Beethoven violin sonatas . Good, if not top draw performances to my ears.

                            Of the Beethoven Violin Sonatas ? - Perlman/Ashkenazy in 5 & 9 - Kremer/Argerich and Menuhin/Kempff are two incredibly different but marvellous cycles .

Oh right . I only have two and frankly I love them both - the du Pre etc recording and the Argerich/Maisky/Kremer version .

One has to wonder what du Pre and Argerich would have been like playing together - spontaneous combustion probably!!
