BaL 9.06.12 - Dvorak's Cello Concerto (merged threads)
Having grown up in Bloomington, Indiana, I was fortunate to hear Starker perform the work live 2 times, as he was on the faculty of Indiana University.J
What a great player Starker was. Would love to have heard him live in the Dvorak.
For me it's the first Rostropovich with Talich and the Czech Phil, a recent, very splendid transfer at Pristine Classical; and the HDTT download of Janigro, with Dean Dixon and the Vienna SOO - this last from an Open reel tape, stunning in its impact and clarity.
I have a soft spot for Antonio Janigro with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra under Dean Dixon which recording was the first time I ever heard the concerto in 1962.
Jayne, I praised this recording back in Message 9. It was my introduction to Dvorak. I am just listening to it on YouTube. With the clarity of sound it is hard to believe that it was recorded back in 1953 by the Vienna Phil (in their day job) and with Dean Dixon, the first black conductor. In those days Dvorak was only really known by the New World Symphony (usually called Symphony No 5 back then!). Janigro is very fine with the tragic parts of the concerto. Although originally a Westminster recording I got it on the World Record Club label.
Ivan March raved in Gramophone about the new Telarc disc from Zuoll Bailey and the Indianapolis Symphony conducted by Jun markl .
Just listened to it on Spotify . Cannot imagine what excited old IM so much . The cellist's tone sounded pinched on the highest notes and the performance struck me as generally routine .. Anyone else heard it ?

Yes! I bought the cd as a result of that review and was left with much the same impression. It's ok and I'm sure I would have enjoyed the concert had I been there but as a lasting document...?
I was going to mention that gutsy version. Seem to remember it was one of those too-tempting [for an impecunious student] half price limited offers on RCA Red Seal, £1.49 at the time IIRC. (Levine's Brahms 1 in Chicago was another such - a stunner in the Toscanini mould, taped in a single spare recording session.)
'The Prom by Jean-Guihen Queyras with Jirí Belohlávek (and the BBCSO) last year was something special and I discovered that they have recorded it (with the Prague Philharmonia, the orchestra founded by JB' Quoted from Chris Newman's msg 27. I was so impressed by the extract from this recording that AMcG played in a CDR some time back, that I rushed out up the Am*zon to buy it. Queyras and the (?) chamber orchestra have a wonderful rapport.
Yes the Harrell/Levine is very good and fascinating compared with the Tortelier/Previn recorded at about the same time . The latter was my introduction to the work and I still love it but the Harrell and Levine sounds like the protagonists are young and just going for it .
