    Thanks caliban (msg 71)

You tease, you! Yes - I will definitely listen, although this is (for me, at least) "a one-performnce, will do" œuvre.

For me it has also been like that. I attended a performance under Charles Groves at RFH with John Ogden and Jeanne Loriod (April 9th 1969 - I've dug out the programme - Josephine Veasey sang La Mort de Cléopâtre in the first half). I was only 19 and for the next 40 years I survived on the memory of that evening. I bought the Previn discs a few years ago but have only listened to it once and not with the concentration and of course not with the youthful intensity that I brought to that live show.

It's the one CD I've got, as I have got Previn in its original 2LP version on my shelves too.
Very happy with those two performances I have to say.
Chailly's Turangalila was one of the very first recordings he made following his appointment as Haitink's successor in Amsterdam (together with Mahler 6, Brahms 2 w Webern's Im Sommerwind IIRC).

            It's a rip-roaring stonker, clive - thanks once again.

I just wish that I had been there

You lucky man! Thanks to Clive Heath's great service (we truly are forever in your debt), we can now all listen to it. Like Am, I am bowled over by it. I thought that I had over-indulged in Turangalila recently but listening to this performance was a bit like hearing the work for the first time - and it was also a reminder of what a stunning pianist we had in John Ogdon. And fine conductor in Sir Charles Groves. I may have to go for a walk to calm down.

Pace FHG, the reviewer did actually confess to liking the Previn. In fact, he seemed to think there were about a dozen satisfactory recordings of the work (of which this was one), but obviously had to get down to more of a shortlist. I retain fond memories of the Previn on an EMI Forte bizarrely c/w exceptional performances of Poulenc's Concert Champetre and Organ Concerto with Simon Preston as the soloist.

Good also to be reminded of the merits of Lutoslawski's Concerto for Orchestra - giving it a blast.

Didn't hear BAL yesterday - was there any mention of having played an extract from the wrong work?

Just caught up with this BAL on the podcast. AMcG said at the beginning that the podcast had been reissued due to an error in the original broadcast.

I find myself in full agreement with 'our' mahlerei's assessment of this issue. It does indeed sweep the board. Such a pity it was not included in the BaL survey.

Though the CD is not as yet released, mp3 and FLAC downloads are currently available from the Hyperion site, and the FLACs are a very reasonable £7.99.

I've had it in my Hyperion basket for a week or so now, but kept on stopping short of clicking the Buy button. This endorsement is just what I needed. Thanks. (Also in my basket are Visions de l'Amen and Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus (both also involving Steven Osborne), along with the recent release of Chamber Music by Schumann.) That's it: time to buy!

I think this new Osborne/Bergen/Mena recording is superb. Orchestra on top form.

I like Turangalila but I have Chung and Previn and frankly two versions are enough for me .
