My shelves yield one recording which I don't think has been mentioned, PO/ Kletzki on CfP 200 from 1964 [along with LSO/ Previn and BSO/ Koussevitzky on LP, plus CDs by RSNO/ N Jarvi and BBCPO/ Noseda (BBC MM)].

A quick look at my bookshelves fails to reveal any review for that Kletzki, in Penguins, EMG or any other LP guide. Would have thought it should be decent, and the Gramophone (JNM) liked the reissue. Must give it another spin!
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

The field then was PCO/ Martinon (Decca Eclipse), SRO/ Ansermet (Decca Ace of Diamonds), BPO/ Karajan (DG), Moscow RO/ Rozhdestvensky (HMV box set), Paris ORTF/ Martinon (Turnabout), LSO/ Weller (Decca) and Cleveland Orch/ Maazel (Decca).

4 Deccas out of 7, not even counting the Turnabout which I think was closely aligned too.

Despite appearances my memory isn't as good as Petrushka's - I just happen to have on my shelves the published version in Building a Library 2 ed. John Lade, pub. 1980
Thanks, LMP! It's good to know that the little grey cells haven't entirely disappeared! And I've never heard of the book - honest!
Do you have the date of that broadcast? Memory is saying November 1979.

Sorry, the book doesn't give any broadcast dates. But Vol 1 was published in 1979 and Vol 2 in 1980, so late 79 looks very feasible.

I think Vladimir Jurowski be a good contender?

Really? I was not that impressed by it, and his Ode to the End of the War is not a patch on Rozhdestvensky's, to my ears. Perhaps I should give it another spin?

Maybe that you should spoin it again, Bryn Sometimes asecond hearing is what it needs? It was reccomended to me by a very good record shop proprietor.

1964 Philharmonia in top form, LMP! Wonder if it was recorded before or after the departure of Walter Legge and UDI?

Soileduk - not to open a can of worms but the quality of the disc itself can be a factor in SQ; years ago Stereophile did a magisterial analysis of digital sound (try their archive - "CD - Jitter, errors and magic") - and found CDs to apparently be the source of worryingly varying levels of jitter, even for the same issues.. (re)mastering is not the only factor...
Hi Jayne,
Oooh that is a can of worms, but yes CD quality as an item is variable. I'd just checked to see if there had been a re-mastering but as there hasn't I'd concluded a case of cloth ear for the second review.
The Kitajenko set has been deleted so if any of you want a set be quick. The river people did have some a little while ago.
I bet that would classic cycle?

That Kletzki is certainly the recording I cut my Prok 5 teeth on, and I've always been rather partial to it.

#39 verismissimo, according to Lebrecht in 'Maestros, Masterpieces and Madness', Legge resigned in June 1963. He flew to Berlin hoping Karajan would give him a job, but he didnt.

I was at what I assume was the same concert (RFH - was it just after the Hall had re-opened??) and I heartily concur with Am51's view. Jurowski's recording (on Pentatone) seems just a bit flat by comparison. I think that his interpretation had matured by the time of the concert (I don't have the booklet to hand but I think that the recording may pre-date the concert by at least a year) and will I suspect continue to do so. So the Pentatone version may be superseded in due course.

As to Kletzki, worth the £7.99 to download?

That sounds about right HighlandDougie - all the Choir seats have backrests after the refurb and they are much more comfortable as a result.
