My shirt is on SCO/Mackerras - a fantastically exciting set!

But did anyone else feel disappointed with his second set, of symphonies from the Linz back to No 29? The brass seems to have been moved back a long way in the balances, which cuts back the thrill factor considerably when the earlier set seemed to make a special feature of forward horns and trumpets
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Not exactly disappointed, but I do know what you mean - the sound certainly isn't as immediate as it is on the first set.

As for the SCO/Mackerras "Jupiter", I certainly don't know a better one. There's only one very tiny (and completely non-musical) problem: the slight chair shifting noise just as the finale starts. I've got a dozen or so "Jupiters" and this has been my favourite ever since I first heard it, and it gets played very regularly.

It's closely followed by several others which I like very much for different reasons, including Bernstein/VPO, Böhm/VPO, Szell/Cleveland and Brüggen/Orch of the 18C.

Excellent list, by the way! Thanks EA.

I incorrectly included this as the CSO, but have now amended the list.

Despite the long list there are some notable conductors absent; there is no Britten, no Furtwängler, no van Beinum, no Erich Kleiber, no Kertesz. I'm surprised no recording survives from any of these.

I generally admire Beecham's Mozart, though I do take issue with his adverse bites of re-orchestration in the Requiem Mass.

In the Jupiter Symphony, the are two one-bar breaks (bar 80 & 268 of the first movement) in the score. In the EMI stereo version Beecham reduces the 4 beat rest to just half its designated length. But in the earlier CBS/Sony version, he cuts a complete 4/4 bar rest to a single beat.
                      Impatience?

I think the ground-breaking Hogwood/AAM is still available?

Yes. There seem to be several "new" options on Amazon, so I'll add it to the list.

EDIT: * = Oops! Not "available", just a review of the (deleted?) CD - not exactly overwhelming in its praise, 'tho more critical of the recording than of the performance.
