    Am glad to have caused so much inadvertant merriment!

    I'm sure the NYPD must have it's own orchestra, or perhaps concert band but I doubt Lennie ever did Mahler with them...

      The Pogues refer to the "boys of the NYPD choir singing Galway Bay" in their classic Christmas song, "Fairytale of New York". I believe no such choir exists but there is certainly a band: http://www.policeband.org/

      Here's a classic video - including the beautiful, much-missed Kirsty McColl to bring a tear to any eye. + a glimpse of what appears to be the NYPD Pipe Band: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwHyu...ayer_embedded#!

        And the boys of the NYPD choir are singing Mahler Eigh', and the bells are ringing out for Christmas day*

        * Or possibly Mahler Two

              Not sure this is the right place, save that it might attract Mahler 8 fanciers: just to note that the first performance on tonight's Through The Night is Elder's performance with a Hallé / BBC Phil combo, and soloists including the likes of Ms Connolly and Mr Finley:

              1:01 AM
              Mahler, Gustav [1860-1911]
              Symphony no. 8 "Symphony of a thousand" for soloists, choruses and orchestra;
              Clare Rutter (soprano) (Magna Peccatrix), Aga Mikolaj (soprano) (Poenitentium), Anita Watson (soprano) (Mater Gloriosa), Sarah Connolly (mezzo-soprano) (Mulier Samaritana), Catherine Wyn-Rogers (mezzo-soprano) (Maria Aegyptiaca), Peter Hoare (tenor) (Doctor Marianus), Gerald Finley (bass) (Pater Ecstaticus), James Creswell (bass) (Pater Profundus), Olivier Latry (organ), Halle Choir; Halle Children's Choir; Halle Youth Choir; City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus; Halle Orchestra; BBC Philharmonic; Mark Elder (conductor)
              "...the isle is full of noises,
              Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
              Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                Just bin reading this thread, and hey bungo, part of the much lauded Tennstedt RFH concert, the one that was released on DVD I think, has turned up on Youtube this very month.
                May sit down later and look for some rougue braces wearers in the audience.

                Is this the one? and can anybody find Part 1?

                Have things moved on re Mahler 8? I quite fancy a nibble at the Sinopoli, as I don't have much of his, and its available for a song in a double with the adagio from # 10.

                Thoughts, anybody?

                BSO are performing this in July in Poole , in what is billed as a " Regional premiere," BTW.
                I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
