Just listening on iPlayer and most impressed with the Gielen. And what do others make of this upcoming bargain?

This was a common complaint made by some critics of Jochum's Bruckner recordings at one time but it has never bothered me

      Hurrah!

Doubtless a lot of us would be trying Gielen for a tenner but £30 ????? !!

Thanks for reminding me - first time I've thought about that for a quarter of a century or so, I think!!
WOW that brings back memories.I used to go into HMV and and Gibbs in Manchester and emerge with a pile of those catalogues (DG Phillips etc) and spend what seemed like hours leafing through them at home.I got almost as much pleasure out of that as actually listening to music!

The Gielen came across well but disappeared quickly as a contender. As for the Celibadache, I think RO said it lasted for 104 minutes. While the stopwatch doesn't tell the whole story this does seem a bit extreme. I think I'll pass on that one.

I do like the way RO says 'symphony'.

I don't mean to be rubbishing the BPO/Giulini selection but if that really is the 'best' version

I am left with the (actually quite pleasing) conclusion that this mighty work is far better

than it can ever be played !

I remember watching a video of Celidache and the Munich Phil in this symphony and it was absolutely gripping. Not sure of the timing, but if it was 104 minutes it certainly didn't feel like it.

Yes, i was surprised at how expensive the Gielen is. Wand's Berlin version is still the one for me.

Its about time Hanssler brought a mid price reissue series.

There would be a lot of takers I suspect.

Good idea, but I don't think Hanssler do such things. Or do they?

I got it a couple of years ago (as the 'fill-up' to Feldman's Coptic Light). At that time I paid £18.50 including p&p form an amazon.co.uk marketplace supplier. £23.47 including p&p seems to be the best price there now.

Re Celi / Munich, at that price anyone who loves Bruckner and has a some mainstream recordings of the symphonies should partake.

The 4th is by some margin the best performance of that work - I'm getting shivvers thinking aobut the end of the finale. The 6th is pretty amazing (esp the Adagio) and whilst the 8th is S-L-O-W you hear many amazing details that you would normally miss unless listening with the score. I've not heard the Munich 5th yet but the live Celi/MPO 5th on Altus is tremendous and I imagine this will be too. The 7th is the one bum note but at the price who cares!

BTW Hanssler is dead cheap to download on emusic - that's where I got the Gielen 8th.

That sounds good enough to me. Will order this box. Thanks.

Giulini arrived this morning. It is on two Cds and I only have had time to listen to the first two movements but they are superb - they sound utterly right. Tempi brilliantly judged and the climaxes are built unerringly.

Good to see Presto coming out on top - they have similar savings on all the forthcoming Celi sets
