He's about as Ukranian as Eugen d'Albert is Glaswegian. Both are accidents of birthplace, unconnected to parentage and artistic heritage. And as Prokofiev's birthplace is in the disputed Donetsk Oblast, I notice that even Wikipedia won't currently risk proclaiming him as anything other than "Russian". Not that it matters a jot.

Indeed, he was Ukrainian-born but of Russian parentage and nationality.

I’m a little surprised, but this is a really good BaL, without the usual constant unnecessary interruptions.

A little disappointed that, when mentioning Bernstein, she did to refer to his recording without narration, too.

Why is it dumbing down? It’s probably the finest work of its kind.

Could this be an excuse to buy the huge Abbado box?

All for music for younger listeners. But all that narration. Not really .Elgars Wand Of Youth. Saint Saens Carnival of Animals and Brittens Young Person Guide far ahead for younger.I guess P&W ok for under 10s

...and yet, as this thread shows, many adults continue to enjoy it if only for the music.

                        Very enjoyable BAL.

For those who don't want to pick up the Abbado box just for this, the recording was also used for a part animated film, which is still available on DVD.

From the excerpts played I preferred Bowie's narration to Sting's, and the playing from the Philadelphia Orchestra and Ormandy in excellent sound was very enticing. I have just picked up a copy for £6 (coupled with the Young Person's Guide).
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

Indeed! Perhaps ucanseetheend should try: https://www.prestomusic.com/classica...the-wolf-op-67 or the Bernstein version similarly without narration: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07JFC5F...r=1-10-catcorr

I agree with all three of your paragraphs, LHC.
I not heard ‘Peter’ for over 50 years and was not expecting the work to survive comparative assessment. KM and her two assistants were excellent and schoolmaster Andrew was quietly relaxed. Prokofiev’s music is doubly distilled, full of wit and masterly in its characterisation.

Written in 2 weeks? Wow! Michael Tippett would probably only have written 14 bars in that time! Excellent BAL reviving many happy memories. I think I too had the Ace of Diamonds LP.

Efrem curtz was, I believe, married to wonderful flautist Elain Schaffer (checkout her Bach Sonatas with George Malcolm). I came to Mahler via his recording of 4th Symphony - the slow movement especially stiill haunting.

The only recording I have is one we enjoyed many years ago when our children were children, with Ralph Richardson and Malcolm Sargent on a CD called which Children's Weekend. Nice disc
