He's about as Ukranian as Eugen d'Albert is Glaswegian. Both are accidents of birthplace, unconnected to parentage and artistic heritage. And as Prokofiev's birthplace is in the disputed Donetsk Oblast, I notice that even Wikipedia won't currently risk proclaiming him as anything other than "Russian". Not that it matters a jot. -

Very enjoyable BAL.
For those who don't want to pick up the Abbado box just for this, the recording was also used for a part animated film, which is still available on DVD.
From the excerpts played I preferred Bowie's narration to Sting's, and the playing from the Philadelphia Orchestra and Ormandy in excellent sound was very enticing. I have just picked up a copy for £6 (coupled with the Young Person's Guide)."I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Written in 2 weeks? Wow! Michael Tippett would probably only have written 14 bars in that time! Excellent BAL reviving many happy memories. I think I too had the Ace of Diamonds LP.
Efrem curtz was, I believe, married to wonderful flautist Elain Schaffer (checkout her Bach Sonatas with George Malcolm). I came to Mahler via his recording of 4th Symphony - the slow movement especially stiill haunting.Comment
