Another lovely cover was the Barbirolli Rubbra/VW disc, again of recordings first issued on 10" LPs in the previous decade.

How do you like the Kurtz Shost 10, Dougie? I'm afraid I was a bit disappointed, perhaps after hearing Herbert do it.
Th Horsley/Cameron Ireland concerto, on the other hand , is the 'classic' for me. The composer was at the sessions and advised on tempo. It was recorded in stereo but the stereo didn't appear for many years.
Coincidentally I saw an original LP of the Menuhin Walton concertos yesterday in a charity shop in Chester.

I always rather liked the Kurtz but the mono recording rather paled in comparison with HvK, especially the first recording, which, in turn, somewhat pales in the face of the stupendous 1969 Melodiya HvK in Moscow performance. But, we have strayed miles from WW's Viola Concerto ...
Last off-topic comment from me is to say thanks for the tip about there being a stereo version of the Colin Horsley Ireland - duly ordered. Of more modern versions, I rather like the John Lenehan CD, not least for the piano pieces on it, which make for an interesting contrast with the mighty Eric Parkin.

Yes, the Ireland concerto has done better than many British piano concertos over the years . I liked Piers Lane's Hyperion disc which couples it with the rarely-heard second version of the Delius concerto.
Straying off-topic is almost a tradition here, as long as one doesn't go too far. At least we are talking about British concertos!

Thanks for reminding me, Pulcinella. I'd even forgotten Rubbra wrote a violin concerto! But there it is, op.103 from 1959. There's a Naxos version which has had good reviews, and I have the Lyrita/Richard Itter colection recording with Endre Wolf and Rudi Schwarz, where the coupling is the Sinfonia Concertante with Rubbra himself at the piano.

Hmm, sounds as if you're a Rubbra fan. If it's not stretching the off-topic envelope too much, among my small stock of 10" LPs is BLP 1029, the fifth symphony, which you will know was the first and for many years the only recording of any Rubbra symphony. Nice Sepia photo of John Barbiriolli on the sleeve, in pinstripe suit and bow-tie.

Talking of British viola concertos I enjoyed that recording of the Arthur Benjamin Romantic Fantasy for violin and viola with Lorraine McAslan and Sarah Jane Bradley on Dutton - I understand the composer used to get annoyed with Heifetz and Primrose playing it too fast - I think most composers would just have been delighted they were playing their piece .

The DON has a tendency to like strict adherence to the score as a baseline, I think. Should be a clue as to his choice, for those of you who have studied it carefully.I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

Might be tempted if tomorrow's BaL is a good one.
