Yes no way that Brautigam's instrument sounds like a 'pub piano' - expertly designed and built by Paul McNulty, the whole cycle was an absolute ear-opener for me and I got the entire series. Actually, I've liked virtually everything Brautigam does, and he seems to always pick a McNulty copy, so he really has faith in them.

As usual, a thankless task with such a huge choice of recordings. So many 'greats' ignored. Nevertheless an interesting and informative BAL. I think I only have Solomon & Schnabel. Just one observation: in the Brendel excerpts the piano sounded rather small to me, compared with many other excellent recordings. I've always had a soft spot for Gulda (I assume no other pianists have performed stark naked?!).

Looking forward to hearing the complete Brautigam performance on Sunday evening’s companion programme…
