Forgot all about this but caught the end . Tennstedt’s Mahler I have mixed feelings about . I particularly did not get on with his Third which put me off the piece for years .

Somewhat surprised by ES’s final decision - in his Gramophone review in Feb 2022 of the Adam Fischer set he plumped for Bernstein’s VPO set over Tennstedt.

Perhaps he was feeling a little self-conscious having been teased earlier in the programme about his Bernstein bias, and having just noted Lennie's additional and misplaced hammer blow, and decided to plump for Tennstedt instead to defy expectations. He did still say he couldn't live without the Bernstein, so more like a double recommendation.

I’m sure you’re right (except that I don’t think he could have jumped ship mid-show. The outlines of the conversation were, as usual, all too obviously scripted, and they have to have the extracts set up in advance.)

Just another example of the poor search facility on QOBUZ. I, too, found it but not without a few non-productive attempts at getting the search terms to fit. The chat with Oliver is there, too, though it's best found by searching for Mahler's 3rd, which the chat is a 'fill-up' for.

I searched Tennstedt Mahler 6 and Tennstedt Mahler 6 Proms and only the LPO studio recording came up. Are you sure this is the live Prom recorded in 1981 ?

I was present at the LPO/Tennstedt Prom on August 22 1983 and will never forget it.

What great days they were! Haitink and the Concertgebouw in Bruckner 9 a couple of weeks later.
