So who was the choice? In the past the winner would be highlighted on post #1 but no longer. Did the Suk Trio get a mention?

I suspect that Alpie has been busy, Richard.

You can always find out shortly after the programme has finished by going to the R3 schedule page, in this case

The Gryphen quartet was the choice. Suk Trio did not get a mention. Just listened to the Gryphen in full on Amazon Prime Music. I *much* preferred Casals.

I’ll have to hear this again, as I don’t remember the outcome. I hope Alpie will highlight them again.

A disappointing BaL to kick off the new season. Bitty and incoherent with no meaningful overview, in fact hardly any mention of composer or score.

            Much preferred Tazza’s contribution earlier.

Don’t like the new start time either.

Found the winning performance dreary and tepid.

That was my overall experience as well! I thought the pianist sounded quite good, in parts, maybe the reviewer, being a pianist, was overly influenced by that?

Have we been given a reason for the change of time? It does not suit me. This coupled with the variable usefulness of what is in on offer, the waning validity of the whole exercise and tiresome twofer format may mean I know longer listen.

BaL recommendations are of course the opinion of the reviewer, and this has given rise to disagreement . I rememeber a BaL reviewer of Sibelius Violin Concerto admitting he hadn't heard of Kulenkampff, whose famous recording is considered by connoisserurs to be the ne plus ultra, and David Owen Norris dismissing some much loved Brahms pianists and selecting a very dull performance whose only virtue was that it contained not one single wrong note.

Oh blimey, same here - just listened. Not for the first time, the content and delivery of this BaL reviewer inspired zero confidence in me, and the conclusion seems to bear that out
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Not reviewed in Gramophone when released in 2007/8 - though RW liked their Mozart - BBC Music magazine reviewer was not overly impressed. I don't blame him or her .

Do you think anyone involved in BAL ever reads comments here?
