I can’t find the reference to back this up right now, but according to my notes WF’s wife said he just couldn't make it work, and Furtwangler himself said that it's almost impossible for a choir to sing.

He conducted it on March 3 1930 in Berlin (with Karl Erb!) Then he just gave up on it.

Furtwangler's mention of it in his notebooks is rather cryptic. But I was thinking he didn't conduct much choral music anyway .
