This is required listening. Previn's last performance of the symphony with the LSO, moving and touched with greatness.

which Ormandy do you mean CBS cut or RCA not cut?

I have a massive affection for this Symphony - overall preferring the uncut to the cut but the Leningrad/Sanderling with minor cuts is one I return to again and again. Some of the earlier American very cut versions though, do have massive energy - Mitropoulos, Rodzinski, Steinberg, Wallenstein - all fun but I do like a long lingering version. Then there are the authentic? Russians - Svetlanov, Rozhdestvensky, Temirkanov conducting Russian and British orchestras!

He clearly loved this work - he seems to caress each phrase!

I'm sticking with Ashkenazy (great Decca sound)

Listened to Eds selection of Janson/St Petersburg (on spotify) and it is rip roaring finale and overall very good playing.

I don't know much of Rachmaninov's 'pianoless' symphonic work either, so picked one up to do a bit of exploration.

Record Review Extra tonight via BBC Sounds will serve well enough in that company, I reckon.

Indeed - and coupling with Franck Sym does not permit much lingering.

Well, for that matter they are all on YouTube for free (uploaded by the publisher). But I'm not sure what a preference for streaming does to the whole concept of BaL. 'Building a Playlist', perhaps?

It completely undermines its raison d’être since you ask. It might be better entitled finding a track

Yes, all on YouTube, in heavily data-compressed relatively low audio quality, far lower than that offered by even the lossy stream options on Spotify or Apple.

You'd probably be horrified about what I'm going to do to the CDs when they arrive, as I generally encode them as 'V 2' VBR (~190 kbps) mp3s.
