The main interest for me was being directed to the Merry Widow March - thanks to YouTube, for the first time I heard the section quoted in the 9th (I think it’s the third subject of the Léhar march) and listened to it ‘back to back’ with what Mahler made of it. Fascinating. To this extent, I’m glad I heard this BAL.

This is s a desert island piece and I thought this and other points made it an interesting BaL even though nothing said or heard shifted me from my preferred versions.

I was also at the Abbado prom and will remember it til I die. His recordings didn't quite capture the event for me. The 1982 HvK was practically the first CD I ever bought and I still have a lot of time for it. Also love the Barbarolli.

I haven't heard the winner but I have both of Rattle's versions of the Tenth, so I probably should get around to listening to him n 9. I heard Barenboim in one of his last CSO concerts perform this--perhaps I mentioned it earlier (?)--and I think it is the only Mahler I have ever heard from him but it was excellent. Perhaps this work brings out the best in Conductors? Has anyone heard the Benjamin Zander disc that was on Telarc, with an entire CD devoted to a lecture about the piece from the Conductor? I knew the piece for years before hearing it and there were so many revelations from Zander that for the next couple of years when I heard it I could almost hear Zander in my ear saying something like "This is where the violas will play the wobble-wobble theme". I was glad when that finally passed

I’m not sure the Rattle’s for me but there’s some fabulous solo playing in the inner movements

Im glad, in this instance I have heard this BaL, too, but again there’s a lot more better recordings out there, than Rattle’s.

I was interested to see that the late Tony Duggan on music Web considered the Rattle very much an ideal version for someone coming to the symphony for the first time.
