I learnt the work from the Walter stereo recording and together with his original recording and Barbirolli/BPO I am content.

I was going to flag his 90s VPO version as an omission, a 'live' performance recorded by Austrian radio and released on EMI, but it seems to have fallen out of the catalogue. His EMI Mahler Symphonies collection has it, but it's been evicted from the latest Warner box in favour of the BPO recording. The original release was apparently coupled with the Strauss Metamorphosen, also with the VPO. Gramophone: 'This may not be a Mahler Ninth for all seasons and all moods, but how thrilling it is to hear the score projected at white heat!'. There are still copies of this and the older Symphonies box floating around if any Rattle fans are interested.

Yes, I have this coupling. Picked it up in an ebay job lot last year. I agree with the Gramophone reviewer insofar as it seems to miss some of the subtleties of many of the other recordings I have. Should anyone on the forum want it, let me know: it's pretty likely to end up in the free-to-a-good-home pile next time I do a cull anyway.

Amazing the consistency of their sound over the years….

I’m beginning to think Sir John is going to ace this ! But where is H Von K ?

If it’s Warner surely it has to be 2008.

Rattle eh? Didn’t see that coming. Even in that last clip wasn’t there some slightly dodgy string intonation ? Going for vibrato less playing in a very exposed section is quite risky …
Sir John is peerless in string conducting.

Warner released a box set of the complete symphonies with Rattle in 2017; perhaps that’s were the erroneous date comes from. But you are right, the recording on Warner dates from 2008.

The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

Yet another of the errors that these live BaLs are littered with.

                        Yes, very plausible explanation.

This felt more like a guide to Mahler 9 with excerpts from some of the best recordings. I liked the descriptions of the music.

Comments on the recordings limited by and large to the segments played rather than the performance as a whole.

Not much overview of the library criteria.

I know you can’t judge much in clips but I just thought Barbs so much better than Rattle not least in the string playing and surprisingly quality of recorded string sound.

Quite, though released a few months later in 2008.
