I've just changed/upgraded my DAC/Pre-Amp/Power Amp set-up and have been listening to various Hi-Res downloads stored on my network server, including F-X R and Les Siècles in 'D & C'. A reminder of how this recording made me listen again (and again) to a work which I'd rather written off, apart from the second suite. Irrespective of the virtues of Cluytens, Dutoit, Jurowski, Monteux et al, I just think that this performance/recording "gets" this work like no other. No doubt it won't feature in BaL but, for me, it would be my choice.

There's a low profile but exceptional version by YNS with the Rotterdam orchestra in fantastic 24-bit BIS sound. Highly recommended.

Has to be the Ansermet for me. Phew!

Incidentally, slightly OT, but are there two versions of the suite, which commences with the Daybreak movement - one with, and the other without the choirs?

The Suite No 2 is actually just the last 15 mins of the ballet. Most recordings of the suite omit the chorus but some include it - for example the Stoki Decca version (which has a VERY Stoki approach to the final chord...)

This rang a vague bell so one of those "oops!" moments - when searching through my e-classical downloads - as in I seem to have downloaded this performance in 2015. Now re-downloading so must investigate, although it will take a lot to dislodge Roth.

With so much else queueing, if not cueing, up to be listened to, I am only now getting to hear the Roth. I seem to recall some criticism being 'voiced' here regarding the wide dynamic range. I very much welcome the exploitation of concert conditions with very attentive audiences. Concert ambience can often be a problem with live recordings. I guess it's a matter of striking the balance between close miking to attenuate audience noise and capturing something of the venue's acoustics. For me, this recording strikes the right balance. What wonderful orchestral colours Ravel, Roth & co. paint in!

Is that the LSO/Stokowski Decca Phase 4 one?

Yes, that's right. Comes with a cracking La Mer

I listened to it last night. Normally I don’t like the artificiality of Phase 4, but Stokowski himself insisted on being in the remixing team, and that made a big difference to the result.

Just listened to the F-X R recording on Spotify. My go to recordings of Daphnis are Monteux and Boulez, but after hearing the Roth I would say that all those who spoke out in support of this recording were well justified in doing so. Irrespective of the instruments employed it is a superb, delightfully characterised, transparent and crystal clear performance.

It would certainly get my award for the best recording quality - the dynamic range (from ppppp to fffff) is pretty astonishing and, of course, it benefits from De Doelen's wonderful acoustics. Y-N is a fine Ravelian - he also recorded a very good Ravel disc for EMI with the Rotterdam PO.

Despite my earlier post on a related thread, it does appear that the broadcast will be going ahead this coming Saturday, and that Andrew MacGregor made a mistake after the previous BaL.

That’s ok, because I have a few recordings. I miss your highlighted winners!
