No easy judgements, fastidiously balanced, elegant, precise and evocative."

She begins by saying that it is "undoubtedly a painstaking labour of love. Every detail has been thought through and and is expressed with clarity". Her reservations are about its asceticism, lacking the emotional impact of Petrenko or Currentzis. But what close listening it all evinces.

I dunno, what is it with FoR3 and the Gramophone? I give up.....time for bed & painkillers...
It’s not a criticism it is a refreshing review and is coruscating about ascetic Tchaikovsky. She hardly praises Petrenko and describes Currentzis as unruly and “ shamelessly manipulative “ and compared to him Jarvi is intelligent and refined so gives him a much harder kicking too. A plague on all their houses review.

I think you are clearly forcing the very carefully-nuanced text of her review to meet your own initially exaggerated response to it. But I can hardly quote the whole piece here, just invite others who can read it to offer their own very welcome views......

Having listened to the middle movements of the 6th and sampled the others (via Qobuz 24/96), I can only add that her report on the interpretation and sonic character appear to be accurate and fastidiously expressed. And it is very different - a fascinating listen!

I am afraid I do not agree . It seems rather you are placing a gloss on her words that they do not merit .

The thrust of her review of Jarvi’s recording is very clear that for all its virtues it is of a type that drains emotion from the work and undermines its very essence . Indeed she says Granted, the general trend these days is to resist the sublime and “subvert” the greatness of composers and their masterpieces . Jurowski’s and Kirill Petrenko’s recent recordings share something of this approach but they are not as extreme as Jarvi’s

I am not sure how there can be anything but one interpretation of her criticism of Currentzis’s recording.

If Jarvi’s Pathetique falls at one end of the spectrum at the other end is the unruly and shamelessly manipulative Currentzis.Compared to that Jarvi’s music making with the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra undeniably possesses the virtues of intelligence and refinement

I'm listening to Andrew Litton. The BIS sound is stunning. So far seems a great performance but I don't have a score or the kind of expertise to judge beyond saying it seems to git all the right spots and the orchestra play superbly.
