Would it have been too much to ask, to assess the whole set?
Most of these works are not of epic length....

Interestingly, the first time any of the cello sonatas were covered by BaL was in October 88, when Lionel Salter reviewed the whole set. I'm afraid I don't know what he recommended. Since then, BaL has only focussed on individual sonatas. No. 3 was covered in Mar 05 when Alyn Shipton made the Brendels his first choice; Pleeth/Tan period choice; Kliegel/Tichman budget-price choice; and Casals/Schulhof historic choice. Apart from that, Sonata No. 4 was covered by Helen Wallace in Dec 08 and that's it. Both the Brendels and Pleeth/Tan versions come from complete sets (as does Perenyi/Schiff which was Helen Wallace's first choice for No. 4) which does suggest that they could just as easily cover all of the sonatas, given that there's a fair chance that the first choice will come from a complete set again.

No du Pre/Bishop ? - my first recording on Classics for Pleasure and still my favourite of all I have heard.

It does seem to be still available in the 17CD box Jacqueline du Pre The Great recordings

Er... yes. Will amend. Not sure which name to give the pianist though.

Yes. Not Horszowski as listed by Alpie. It is also wrongly attributed on the version I have (a historical bonus disc on the Brilliant Classics 100CD Complete Beethoven). It was recorded with Otto Schulhof nine years earlier in London in 1930 - confirmed by Discogs data here. I notice that some confusion also reigns on the Naxos re-issue, where Schulhof is mentioned on the cover but if you click their tracklisting it is still attributed to Horszowski. The accompanying notes observe: "Had the war not intervened, we might have had a re-recording of the Sonata in A major with Horszowski."

              It's on YouTube.

I have a rather nice HIP version that Christophe Coin and Patrick Cohen recorded for Harmonia Mundi some years ago - it doesn't appear to figure in the list.

Did their recording of Op 69 ever make it to CD? I have their CD of Op. 5 but not the later ones.

Interesting, Discogs appears to only know of the vinyl original. Unfortunately, it does not seem to be on QOBUZ.

                        I agree.
I have the Brendels' set, plus Tortelier/ Heidesiek on LP. I am now interested in a HIPP set and notice that there are a few, but given the reviewer I doubt that I will get any guidance in that direction.

For a HIPP set, you would not go far wrong with Isserlis and Levin. If you want to save and are quick enough, Anner Bylsma and Jos Van Immerseel can be found in the 1 remaining copy of a 5 CD set, replete with all the solo instrument concertos. Bylsma also recorded a set with Levin (Nonesuch) which may be a little harder to find, these days.

The 2020 Alpha Release with Altstaedt and Lonquich is outstanding - I spent most of last Saturnalia playing it.... reviewed very well too.

                            Instrumentarium:

                            Nicolas Altstaedt:
violoncello - giovanni battista guadagnini (1711-1786), made in Piacenza 1749 classical bow by luis emilio rodriguez
                            a and d pure gut
                            g and c wound gut (silver/copper);

                            Alexander Lonquich
: fortepiano by conrad graf, vienna c. 1826/27

Thanks for that, Jayne - I missed that Alpha release last year. Any recording featuring the heavenly sounds of a Conrad Graf attracts my attention!
