I don't know which remastering other forumites have but I bought the original LP and then CD (on one track!) and thought both sounded glassy and coarse. I've had new equipment since then and listening to the remastering done for the 2012 Karajan 1980s box was a revelation. I'm presuming that it is the same as this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Strauss-Ein...rpt=ABIS_MUSIC
HvK hailed from Salzburg. Was he a mountain climber in his younger days? I know he skied a lot.
Does anyone know why Reiner never recorded it?

Originally posted by Goon525 View PostOK, well back on track, I was surprised the excellent recent Jurowski didn’t get a look in. I wonder whether the Kempe (perhaps never the best recording quality) is a bit long in the tooth. As a confessed audiophile, I think sound quality matters a lot in a work like this. The LSO/Haitink, even though recorded in the unhelpful acoustic of the Barbican, doesn’t sound bad.

I have the set as well, and it worth getting, if you can still find a copy."I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

The last disc in the set is a blu ray audio disc of all his analogue recordings on DG, but not Alpensinfonie as that was a digital recording.

However, we should recognise we need to relinquish that expectation nowadays. What used to be a useful, authoritative survey of a work (at least as a starting point) is no more. Occasionally, as an outlier, something comes along as reminder of what we have lost (Elgar Violin C - whatever one thinks of Owen-Norris). We now have a DJ spinning some discs with someone, very often from the BBC roster (ex New Generation, etc) with some comments or observations.
