I know Michael Kennedy chose the LAPO/Mehta recording in March 81.
Did he really? There weren’t all that many versions available then, but I don’t think I’d have chosen that one. Carefully played and recorded, but a trifle dull. At this rate, the reviewer will choose one of the two Franz Welser-Möst recordings.

Ah, but that was pre-Haitink. That was the one he said would now be first choice when it he reviewed it. Incidentally, he liked Mehta’s later BPO recording even more than his first one.
Del boy: “Get in, get out, don’t look back. That’s my motto!”

I have Kempe,Haitink and Shipway - all terrific - I think enough for me.

Rudolf Kempe for me every time.
Heavens Frank Shipway! The first concerts that I ever went to were the Forest Phiharmonic seasons at Walthamstow Town Hall conducted by Frank Shipway. My violin teacher played in the front desk of the violas. And we would always get a bag of chips from the High Street on the way back home. Mid 1970s. Wonderful memories.

The Shipway recording is on BIS with the São Paulo orchestra made not long before he died as a result of a car accident . It’s excellent.

Thank you. I shall buy it in memory of some wonderful evenings. I didn't realise he was kiiled in a car accident. Presumably if he hadn't tragically died in that car accident more recordings might have followed off the back of the success of Eine Alpensinfonie.

It’s funny you should say that. He conducts the work just as JB might have done. Similarly I think Barenboim conducts the worth as Furtwangler might have done.

Yes and apparently he was rumoured to have mellowed from his FPO days . I think he also accompanied Christian Poltera on a BIS record of the Walton and Hindenburg Cello concertos. The Shipway record to get if you can find it is his Tring RPO Mahler 5
....and a fine choice. I would add Haitink in Amsterdam, Kempe in Dresden.
I had just received the Kempe set in its latest Warner remasterings. 2 conclusions:
1) The newest remasterings really breathe life into this set
2). I still dislike the Alpine Symphony. There is about 2 minutes of worthwhile music surrounded by half an hour of high calorie Straussian bombast. Come to think of it that sums up Zarathustra and Metamorhisen as well.
As promised, I’ve added a list, but departing from my usual practice, I’ve stolen it from Wikipedia, with the justifiable excuse that I compiled most of that current list myself.
