I've just relistened to this programme as Hannah French mentioned that Sub olea pacis et palma virtutis... : Melodrama de Sancto Wenceslao was Zelenka's most admired work in his lifetime. She didn't play anything from it but I thought she'd mentioned that there was a good recording. Having listened to the programme again, it appears that the recording she mentioned featured Hanna Blazikova with Ensemble Inegal. However, I can't find any such recording - does it exist? Or did Ms French make a mistake?

Here it is, Darloboy! But not with Ensemble Inégal.

Thanks! It's not with Hanna Blazikova either - it's Anna Hlavenkova. I think you're right though and this is the recording she meant as I can't find any other complete recordings of this work.

Indeed...I can't believe that the catalogue is bursting with different versions of the work! That Supraphon series is very good, unearthing a lot of unknown pieces.

Following on from our enthusiasm for Zelenka, I heard extracts from this new disc on France Musique yesterday.

Sacred music by one Simon Brixi, another in the Supraphon "18th century Music from Prague" series. Some fine things here, and excellent, springy performances with the Hipocondria Ensemble. I like the name of the ensemble, a nod to Zelenka!

...I've just looked up the series on the Supraphon website, and there are some fascinatingly intriguing new names to me which I would love to hear..more to add to the shopping list, I fancy!

Supraphon Music Publishing is the most significant Czech record label, and has a distinguished history. The Supraphon name, (originally used for an electric record player, a technical marvel of its day), was first registered as a trademark in 1932.

I have just received, from Presto, Officium defunctorum ZWV47 & Requiem in D ZWV46 - Accent ACC 24244: Collegium Vocale 1704 & Collegium 1704, cond Vaklav Luks, which has been on order since November. So perhaps they have stock. FYI.

There’s a really terrible edit at the end of the podcast edition of this programme. Hannah French introduced the extract from Ensemble Inégal’s Psalm settings. At the end, Andrew says it’s the Sanctus from Collegium 1604’s Requiem in D major. The edit cut out Hannah’s recommendation of the Missa Navitatis (which is listed on the web site) as well as her summary of her main recommendations. I appreciate that an edited version will be shorter than the original programme but they really need to take more care not to ruin it.

Why do they need to edit it down anyway?

Good question. I was under the impression that they did it to shorten the music extracts for copyright reasons - but what they've actually done here is just cut a whole chunk out of the programme.
