Yes, I've heard good things about Ben Grosvenor's recording and also Brendel. I think I will have a look on eBay and see what I can find! Thanks for the pointer Alison!

There was a rather lovely BBC Music Mag CD many years ago, of John Ogden. You also got the two concertos. May still be a few copies knocking around 'out there'
Well worth it, I can tell you.

Nice. For once I can actually almost read Liszt's handwriting! I've ordered the Brendel (a very cheap CD from eBay). I also remembered a couple more recordings I have: Rubinstein (coupled with Franck on BMG) and Simon Ghairchy (Challenge Classics). I'll keep adding as I find more
          Best regards,
          Jonathan

I'm not sure how many Brendel recordings there actually are, but the IBS one listed is the same as the Vox! https://www.ibsclassical.es/product/ancora-un-segreto/

It's my favorite Liszt work, which is damning it with faint praise, but I first became aware of it when Lazar Berman laughed an international career. I have his recording in a Sony box, but it seems not to be on the list. The Brendel Philips has long been the one that I play but I recently acquired Richter as part of a large box and that is pretty wild.

Not a work to which I want to listen very often but it has featured regularly in recitals I've attended. I was impressed by the recent BG - I am parti-pris as far as he is concerned - but I do like Emil Gilels in his 1975 live Concertgebouw recital (in a 5 CD box set - on Fondamenta) and the Richter referred to several times earlier.

No, me either - the one I've bought is in a yellow case and also includes the Dante Sonata, the First Mephisto Waltz and La Lugubre Gondola. I suspect there are several others too!

A couple of recordings which have been brought to my attention but may not qualify for consideration on BaL are by John Ogdon (Sonata + Concertos) on BBC Classics and LLyr Williams's recital disc on BBC MM 254. These are available from ebay and Amazon at £10.59 and £4.50 respectively.

Is that the recording now available on BBC Classics? There's a BBC Music Mag CD (No. 254) by Llyr Williams that includes the Sonata.

                          Sounds like the Vox, 1958.

It is in fact, the BBC Classics version. Well-worth acquiring IMVHO.

Out of curiosity, did Liszt write any other piano sonatas, it seems odd that such a gifted pianist should stop at one.

                                There is the Dante Sonata.
