Natasha on a second rate mic. Why do they find this so difficult?

This is yet another grimly poor BAL so far.

Looks like PatKop and Say will be front runners.

Is it just me or is some of the violin playing on offer a bit rough and ready ?

Sound as though Pat Kop is well in the running, but to me it's the kind of over-excited approach I'd enjoy in concert but not for repeated listening. As for the description of Adolf Busch's playing as 'larded with quivering vibrato', I disagree most strongly.

Utter bilge - and that comparison of Pat Kop and Busch in the last extract - Busch won over Pat Kop's gabbled rushed account to my ears.

But where the hell are all the other great recordings of this piece ? So far - ignored.

Yes it does look like PatKop and Fay-unless there’s going to be a significant plot twist at the end. Incidentally, Natasha’s mic, in addition to its other deficiencies, comes with a bumper amount of old-fashioned hiss.

Maybe but surely some roughness should be welcomed in Beethoven. One of the criticisms I often see levelled at modern recordings of the string quartets is that they are too perfect. They shouldn’t sound easy.

Surely Menuhin should get a mention!

Curiously keeps playing Mutter and Orkis even though it’s obvious they can’t win.

One of the variation excerpts had some seriously sharp intonation I thought....
I’ve got a Heifitz recording where he plays that bit really well..
(He plays it all really well to be fair )

Unless I missed a bit - were Perlman, Grumiaux Heifetz and Menuhin entirely ignored.

It seems Pat Kop is the Beethoven choice of radio 3 reviewers after her " remarkable' Beethoven VC won .

Sounds all too exhausting for me - DD in Gramophone described it as part brilliant part questionable I think .

Very much liked the Mullova extracts .

That recording with Moiseiwitsch - I must have worn it out playing it so much. Just those opening stopped chords never bettered ?
