I've been going back to the Visovan/Bonet too. The control of tone, colour and line through the Variations is remarkable, isn't it? Then the finale alive with fantasy, passion and virtuosic play. We've been here before, but never quite like this....
Revisiting it now for the first time since the Winter, it begins to seem as essential and unavoidable a modern classic as Schiff's Brahms Concertos... one that places earlier recordings in a new critical perspective, that simply has to heard by anyone enamoured of this incredible music....
(And c/w you get an Op.96 of extraordinary range, power and beauty...)

The Bertsche copy fortepiano and the 1724 Tononi were a great attraction in this repertoire, as ever....
The lack of reviews is strange..... if anyone finds one - let us know here....
(search "sonata lunatica" or either of the artist's names etc etc...)Last edited by jayne lee wilson; 22-06-21, 03:05.

In recent months Presto has listed Faust/Melnikov as "out of stock at the UK distributor", which is a pity as I would like to add it to my collection. I also have Schneiderhahn/Seeman which I bought cheaply a few years ago and is in a traditional Viennese style (although unfortunately they do not take the first movement repeat) and Menuhin/Kempff on LP.
