Agreed: an excellent BaL. Summerly really is the consistent gold standard.

With BaL, I think it better to pre-record. It makes edits of slip-ups, Internet problems, etc. possible. They could even use the facility to remove, or at least truncate, some of the extraneous comments from you know who.

Do you have any views on the counter- tenor-in this -piece debate ? - until Jeremy mentioned it I hadn’t realised there was one

I very much doubt if Orff would have known what a modern countertenor (i.e. male falsettist) was in the 1930s - they hadn't been invented!

For further details see my post #31 on this thread http://www.for3.org/forums/showthrea...rnatural+voice

I still like André Previn and Rafael Frübevk de Burgos.

Just listened to the winner. I note the final Penguin guide criticised the digital transfer (not sure if it’s been updated) but I thought the sound was pretty good with soundstage width and depth and plenty of impact. An impressive performance- although, given Mr Summerly’s sensitivity on the subject, a surprise number of audible edits and early fades.

At least Previn was mentioned. R F de B's recording didn't even get a mention which I thought odd indeed given the outstanding choral singing, soloist excellence and the great playing/conducting.
                Warum?

I imagine this says nothing new but it is grim reading nonetheless about his lies re the White Rose movement and behaviour to his daughter.

I remember watching Palmer’s film about Orff; fascinating if grim viewing.

Me too. Mind you, the shameful opportunism he showed both in the Nazi period and immediately afterwards (which maybe he made amends for to some extent in his later work, at least I would like to think so) was by no means unique to him. The claim by people like Strauss that they were uninterested in politics and therefore innocent bystanders is just as problematic in its way.

Is that Tony Palmer movie available anywhere?

You can get it as part of a 3 DVD boxset on music under the Nazis, which includes Palmer's films on the Wagner family, Orff, and Hindemith.

There are also a couple of copies available on Amazon, but they are much more expensive.

So do I, particularly the Previn, yes a bit rough at times, but the energy and edge that Previn gives to the work is I feel ideal. I have heard the Muti, it's ok but strangely uninvolving for me, compared to Previn & Frubeck de Burgos.
