I remember a staged tv version, from Germany I think, that had Hermann Prey and Lucia Popp, with Lucia I seem to recall singing apparently naked in a barrel - don't ask me why.
Oh dear. Popp, naked and barrel got my surreal schoolboy imagination working.
Sorry.
For the purposes of accuracy Lucia is not seen naked - it is implied and she is not in a barrel . She is in what appears to be a large garden ornament of the sort you might see at Chatsworth. She sings divinely as does a youthful Hermann Prey.

A piece of music I cannot stand - once was dragged by friends to see it on a visit to Hong Kong in 1993 - with David Atherton conducting - horrible despite the performers best efforts. Glad I am away camping for once !
As it's Jeremy Summerly, I think I'll give it a miss. I find him too arrogant ......
Of course one must speak as one finds. I must leap to his defence though. Apart from his being (IMHO of course) an authoritative reviewer, I also remember him as a stunningly good conductor of Schola Cantorum of Oxford. I remember a few of their concerts under his direction vividly even after some time passing.

Rather amazed how little discussion of this work compared to the ghastly Orff.
Perhaps the desire to make it known that one WON'T be listening to the latter is stronger than the desire to make it known that one WILL be tuning in to the former.
It reminds me a bit of the Radio Active Mass Debate on the BBC TV drama 'Threads' during which one chap repeatedly shouted that he demanded the right to remain silent
I, for one, am entirely willing to tolerate others' liking for this ghastly work.
Actually Bryn intolerance and grumpiness is probably a forum feature. Hopefully most of the time it stops short of offensiveness, but it does reflect the age and stage of the lives of many contributors. A dull world it would be if we all agreed on too many things. As for the works in question ghastly is not a word I would use to describe Carmina Burana and if I needed a musical lift would be more likely to provide it than the rather stark Sibelius work. Not a bad work i haveva number of recordings of it - I like the Chung/Previn and Spivakovsky/Hannikainen but I would not place it in my top 20 favourite Sibelius works or Violin Concertos.
