BaL 8.05.21 - Smetana: Má Vlast

    9.30 Building a Library
Anna Picard chooses her favourite recording of Bedrich Smetana’s Má Vlast.

Dedicated to the city of Prague, Smetana’s Má Vlast (’My Country’) is a series of six orchestral tone poems depicting Bohemian legends, landscapes and history, replete with nationalistic and political meaning for Smetana and his Czech audiences. Its second movement ‘Vltava’ is the best known: a thrilling portrayal of the journey of Bohemia’s longest river and one of music’s greatest landscape paintings.

My mistake. Karajan only recorded Vltava.

Has there ever been a bad recording? And who represents the HIPP entry?

Jakob Hrusa's Prom performance in 2019 was very impressive - first time I've ever been completely convinced by it as a set.

IIRC, the Kubelík/ Czech Phil was the winner last time this cycle was considered. Kubelík had retired a few years previously due to ill-health, but was persuaded out of retirement to conduct the opening concert of the 1990 Prague Spring Festival. Long-serving members of the orchestra remembered that he would not conduct in Czechoslovakia (as it then still was) during Communist rule, so as soon as the Communists were overthrown the invitation was extended to Kubelík, who agreed to conduct the work as a one-off. I think that this was his last concert, but I am open to correction on this point.

I'd be surprised if it failed to take the palm this time as well. It's a wonderful performance, full of the sense of the special occasion that no other version can boast .... except for the extraordinary performance from Talich in 1939 with the country under Nazi occupation. It will never be a library choice but anyone who loves Ma Vlast should have it.

I'm a bit puzzled by Belohlavek's Decca recording which has something not quite right about it that I can't put my finger on. It's still very good but lacks the touch that Kubelik's 1990 recording brings.

I have a Czech PO/Neumann recording on Supraphon that isn't on the list, presumably nla but surely available as a download?

LCP/RN, of course. Very fine and went down very well in Prague, too.

I stand admonished. But was intended as tongue in cheek, only. In fact, I am going to investigate, so thanks for the nod.....

Also Vysehrad on an LP with Vltava (please add your own diacritical marks). SLPM 139037 c/w Liszt. Possibly a complete recording was intended but it was either not recorded or unissued. Osborne R. would advise, if I could find it.

Could be the case as normally if more than one of the 6 is done it is usually No 4!

It's a nice recording - and you get the Czech Republic National Anthem with it!
