I'm one of those who fails to see the point in clamouring for the return of Interpretations on Record (it surely will never happen), but that format was surely needed here. Instead of the Goodman being peremptorily ruled out, we might have had some discussion of its undoubted merits. The harpsichord doesn't bother me a bit, though that probably has a lot to do with my defective hearing!

It does not bother me, either, and I can hear its bones rattling quite clearly.

The Jacobs 'Oxford' Symphony is also available in the HM Lumières box, which some of us probably already have.

Not had mine off the shelf lately - must have a listen - Jacob’s performances are very lively but I sometimes wonder what his percussionists are on and whether I should get some or steer clear!

His Freiburg Mozart 38-41 are a classic set - No.38 was the BaL winner a few years ago (excellent (singlehander) Tom Service survey, which many here admired)....I have the Japanese HQCD issue with sound truly to die for.....howsoever you respond, you certainly won't be bored....

EU one still here of 39 & 40....

But the Japanese duo (same cover) price has gone sky-high....

Wonderful recent Missa Solemnis on the excellent HM 20/27 series...I'll try to pick up on this 92 later...

94 and 95 were first released on Nimbus along with the Toy symphony, which the Hanover Band give a suitably boisterous performance.

What is the date of the recording on that disc with the Toy Symphony? I note that the recording on the compilation with 100 and 104 was made in December 1987 and that on Hyperion was recorded in September 1992. The movement durations are very different in those two recordings. I will try and make time to listen in the coming days to check on repeats, etc. No time today due to Tectonics.

Bryn, sorry but I'm not at home this week to have a look at the date of the disc ..but knowing your excellent detective skills, I'm sure you'll find out before I get back! I'm pretty sure that 94, 95 were recorded at the same time as the Toy Symphony, that is to say 1987; all three works were first issued on the one Nimbus disc.

Just listened to this BAL...I had forgotten I had the Jacobs on my shelves. Hearing these comparisons, for me there is no doubt that he is not only on cracking form, but is also given the most beautifully spacious recorded sound by Harmonia Mundi.

Pulled my Decca Haydn box off the shelves yesterday to listen to 92. The box is split between Hogwood, Dantone (one disc) and Bruggen who gets the call in the Oxford. It’s one of the better Bruggen efforts—he seems to be awake here, which is the exception to most of his contributions where he could be replaced by a metronome. The piquant HIPP sounds are much more enjoyable than the Szell comparator

The very last thing I would ever feel, or say, about Bruggen, such a poet of the Rostrum from Rameau to Beethoven, is that his direction is ever metronomic. His conducting, especially of the sturm und drang Haydn Symphonies (originally in a Philips OAE box from 26 to 65, better recorded in a more sympathetic acoustic than the earlier O18thC tapings of the later symphonies (often in the large and resonant Vredensburg), a personal icon rarely far from my playlist) has a unique poetry and flexibility. A very distinctive, very beautiful sound. One of the few conductors I would call a genius (echoed as such by Luciano Berio) I love almost all his work, but I no longer have health or strength or will for lengthy debate.

But one always defends one's Musical Gods. The World was a better place while he was still here. I think I still miss him, really.

LPB/Kuijken has plopped onto the doormat -- fresh with classy playing & well-judged speeds. Excellent sound for a 30-year-old recording. This & Orch.18th Century/Brüggen will do me.
